J.D. ROBB

Rhythmania & Other Electronic Musical Compositions LP

Folkways Records

with booklet

Rare Folkways records original from american composer J.D. Robb using the Synthi AKS Synthesizer, the Arp 2600 and the Moog Synthesizer.

Some info on the release:  Original released back in 1976. Released by the Folkways records label (John Cage, David Tudor, Ilhan Mimaroglu, Henry Jacobs, Tod Dockstader, Barton McLean and Gianni Safred, Barton Smith, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Travelon Gamelon, Malcolm Goldstein, Philip Corner). The record features a lot of small pieces experimenting with various electronic gadgets and synthesizers (Synthis AKS, Arp 2600, Moog, Synthi Sequencer 256), using field recordings, electronic oscillators, etc.

Robb studied composition with Horatio Parker, Darius Milhaud, Roy Harris, Paul Hindemith, and Nadia Boulanger. He composed a large body of music, including two operas, symphonic and chamber music, and electronic music. His orchestral works have been conducted by Maurice Abravanel and Leonard Slatkin. Among his notable composition students is Halim El-Dabh.

While at the University of New Mexico, he collected approximately 3,000 field recordings of traditional music from the American Southwest, Nepal, and South America, which formed the core of the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music at the University of New Mexico.

Not many people walk away from a successful international law career to devote their time to making electronic music at the ripe age of 49 years. John Donald Robb did just that when he set up shop in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1941 and dove head first into a career as a composer, ethno-musicologist and an early electronic music noodler whose bizarre and singular electronic music recordings are short on same old same old and long on quirky, beat audacity. Quite close to  Lejaren Hiller, Roger Reynolds, Alvin Lucier and of course David Behrman, Larry Austin, Jerry Hunt, Glenn Branca, Bruce Haack, Phil Niblock, Charlemagne Palestine, Noah Creshevsky and Charles Dodge. Complete albums of his music have appeared on Folkways (2), Opus One and Locust Music and include a wide range of works from large ensembles to soloists with electronic and computer-generated tape.

Condition: Cover lies in excellent- condition, quite well preserved (see photo). Vinyl lies in very good(+) condition, showing to have some light marks on both sides.
