The JAWARI is a circuit that was designed by Tim Escobedo to emulate the sound of an Indian sitar by means of an electrical guitar. It does so by immediately damping the sustain after the attack, thereby creating the dead 'ploink' of the sitar. Of course will not fool anyone into thinking you are playing a real sitar, and it's not an effect that you will want to use on every song.

This being said, the JAWARI remains an interesting experimental circuit that has its own specific sound. There is one control knob, which controls the gain in the circuit and maxxed out it provides a very mean, gated, Zvex-like fuzz that will make vintage fuzz connaisseurs cringe. Still, the circuit is related to octaver circuits, but does not have the high gain (at the low, sitar settings) common to these circuits. Maybe there is even something to be gotten from putting a high gain pedal in front of this one. Certainly the basic sitar sounds can also easily be shaped futher by using compression, delay, chorus or other modulation effects.

It is built into a hand-sanded Hammond 1590B box with etched graphics, coated in 8 layers of clear lacquer for protection. Footswitch is true bypass, with a 5mm purple indicator LED for extra psychedelic mojo. There is a DC jack for standard European DC plugs (as in your Boss pedals) but no battery clip. Come on, if you like pedals, you really should own a good regulated power supply. If you are desperate though, I will solder up a little connector so you can still hook up a battery from the outside.

I built too many pedals, so some should go. Mind, this is a pedal that is not commercially available anywhere from stores, so this really is your chance to get a whacky pedal nobody else has. I do think the case turned out really nice -- and that's good because sanding and etching by hand one really takes a lot of time.

Le JAWARI est un circuit designé par Tim Escobedo et cherche à simuler le son du sitar Indien sur une guitare éléctrique. Ceci est achèvé par réduction immediate des resonances, ce qui donne cet son 'ploink' characteristique pour le sitar. Bien sûr, personne ne se trompera de penser qu'il s'agit d'un vrai sitar et ce n'est pas un effects à utiliser sur chaque track.

Néamoins, le JAWARI reste un circuit experimentale intéressante, avec un son vraiment particulier.  Il y a un bouton, qui determine to montant d'amplification et fournis un ton dit 'sitar' au minimum et un son fuzz plutôt synthetique et moderne au maximum. Des experiments en combinant le JAWARI avec des autres effects (echo, chorus, boost, compresseur) donneront des posibilités illimitées.

Le JAWARI est construit dans une boîte Hammond type 1590B, poli à la main. Les element graphiques sont ajoutés par gravure chimique, après traité d'un coating transaparante. L'interrupteur est 'true bypass' donc pas de perte de signal si la pédale n'est pas active, et il y a un indicateur 5mm LED mauve. Il y a une connexion pour adapteur 9V DC type BOSS ou une alimentation régulé pour effects, mais pas de place pour une batterie. Bref, une pédale écologique...

Le dernier an, j'ai investi trop de temps en construction d'effects et pas assez en les jouant, donc je les vends pour supporter les frais de construction. Attention, cet effect n'est pas disponible en magasin -- donc une occasion d'acquérir un effect assez rare.

De JAWARI werd ontwikkeld door Time Escobedo met als doel de klank van een (electrische?) sitar na te bootsen. Dit gebeurt voornamelijk door het dempen van de notes vlak na de attack, wat resulteert in een snel uitstervende 'ploink' die aan een sitar herinnert. Het is natuurlijk geen perfecte weergave van de sitarklank en het is ook niet een effect dat je in elk nummer zou willen gebruiken.

Toch blijft het een interessant experimenteel circuit met z'n eigen heel specifieke klank. Er is slecht een knop, die de gain in het circuit controleert en de klank van sitarachtige geluiden (bij lage settings) tot een vette, bijna synth-achtige, gegatet, zvexachtige fuzz (bij maximale settings) doet verglijden. Het circuit gebruikt hetzelfde principe als Octaver pedalen, maar dan zonder de buitenzinnige gain en de combinatie van de JAWARI met boosters/overdrives kan interssante resultaten opleveren. Zeker en vast kunnen de sitarklanken nog verfijnd worden door de combinatie van dit effect met compressors, delay, chorus of andere modulatie effecten.

Het circuit werd gebouwd in een Hammond 1590B behuizing en de belettering werd in het metaal geëtst om vervolgens gecoat te zijn in 8 lagen glansvernis voor basisbescherming. De voetschakelaar is 'TRUE BYPASS' en heeft een 5mm purperen indicatie LED. Er is een standaard DC jack voor 9V voeding, maar geen batterijclip. Beter voor het milieu - als je van gitaarpedalen houdt zou je toch mogen investeren in een goede gereguleerde 9V voeding. Als je een echte batterij-junkie bent, soldeer ik wel een DC jack aan een batterijclipje, dan kun je de JAWARI toch van buitenaf met een 9V batterij voeden.

Het afgelopen jaar een aantal experimentele pedalen gebouwd en kan ze onmogelijk allemaal houden. Grijp dus nu je kans op een te gekke pedaal die niet in de winkel te verkijgen is. Ik vind zelf ook nog altijd dat de behuizing aardig gelukt is, en dat is maar goed ook gezien de tijd die erin kruipt om die manueel af te schuren.
