Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: Brain 1002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Scarce: not a ‘big’ name even by Krautrock standards outside Germany. Early, classic-period Jane albums are elusive and not seen often.

Brief Info: Regarded by many prog-rock connoisseurs as one of the greatest Krautrock albums within the genre. A hard-hitting debut album with a very strong line-up and then briefly including Bernd Pulst, a superb English-singing vocalist – he left soon after. Heavy acid-soaked guitar and organ, this is a blistering set and never again matched by later line-ups or albums. Never as well-known or appreciated like the ‘major’ German acts of the time like Amon Duul, Can, Faust, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream outside their native country, ‘Together’ is still one of prog’s best-kept secrets, the fact they were not issued in the UK was clearly a major factor, hence finding their albums here is never easy. Issued on the classic Krautrock prog label Brain and this copy in very fine condition. This example on the early green label has hardly been played, it has a few fine surface marks and a few minor surface sounds and gentle sporadic ticks but finding this classic in much better condition will not prove easy. Brain records pressing quality I have found variable over time and not always silent. This does have some quiet passages but most plays very well indeed. If this genuine prog-rock classic – some even say ‘masterpiece’ – has eluded you all this time, ‘Together’ demands to be heard. A gem from rock’s most experimental era, highly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: EX but looks far, far better. Only downgraded from high EX because a bottom back edge split has been repaired by myself. This is neat and has little visual impact. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated. Printed and made in Germany.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both sides look fantastic, clean, fresh and the laminate fully adhered, shiny and clear. Superb, typically arty Krautrock type graphics on the cover that look brilliant, one of the lesser-seen gems from the prog-cover catalogue. Even under light, barely any traces of dulling or friction rubs and the lack of peeling on a German cover is a bonus because it happens on many. Almost devoid of creasing and marks, the neat repair (if I say so myself) on the bottom of the back edge, near the left side, now appears as a fine crease and is now solid and secure. High in my Krautrock hall-of-fame classic covers, this will not be easy to find better. If the repair is an issue however, do not bid.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces clean with little to fault.

Top Edges: Both unworn and straight.

Bottom Edges: Odd small chip on front, little else. The back has had a transit split repaired by myself. It’s pretty neat and less than obvious, now more a fine crease, but the eye is not drawn to the area.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering, the front is closed so the record enters on the back edge. There is no trimming.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. No text printed on this one, just the artwork flows around and this is unworn bar one small chip. Virtuall laminate present and secure, a couple of tiny ‘flecks’ can be felt with the fingertip (this being somewhat critical).

Corners: Most neat and sharp, a little rubbing on a couple of the right ones.

Cover Summary: This classic but elusive cover is graded EX, but looks nearer Mint(-), I had to take into account the approximate 2 inch split on the back bottom edge - now repaired - neatly. This has little visibility and this beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors. Any doubts however…

The Inner: The plain white unlined inner is included in very fine condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ with little more than a tiny few faint hairlines. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and most of the few surface blemishes superficial. Quite honestly, this record has probably not changed since purchase, minor surface blemishes were often present from new – fact. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat ‘lost’ Krautrock prog classic plays up to its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and just a small few, gentle sporadic ticks noted here and there but generally, a fine pressing. Most of the more major label German pressings were of the highest quality, but some of the smaller labels like Brain and especially Ohr, pressing quality was more variable and silence on these was far from certain. With that in mind, few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this truly wonderful album. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. If silence is mandatory however, well you can wait for the near impossible or try finding the CD version. Vintage vinyl on Brain - this now 38 years old - can rarely be expected to be pristine, but it will be more than evident, this copy has barely been played. All but the most critical or audiophile listeners should love it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
