ALTERNATE TRACK LISTING on SIDE 2
.
LAB-23 was officially released in 1984 as "James Newton Howard & Friends"
This 1983 pre-release Edition Test Pressing of LAB-23 (SL-62) uses the
name "James Newton Howard Quintet"
.
Same personnel, same basic LP concept, though
SIDE 2 is radically different in track titles.
.
I have only heard THIS version, so I can't say how much the actual music varies. Being Direct-to-Disc, this would no doubt entail an entirely separate session for this side -but I have seen (http://www.sheffieldlab.com/sheffield.pl?detail=SL10078) a re-issued CD, listing 2 separate versions of "Amuseum" (3:14 and 4:57); so obviously there were different sessions recorded that did not appear on the LP.
.
I do know that it is fantastic music; easily the best James Newton Howard I've ever heard -great synth / keyboard interplay and all-around dynamic compositions and inspired playing from all.
.
*The International C.E.S. is the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow.
Back in the 1980's it catered heavily to the Audiophile Stereo Equipment and
Vinyl retail dealers.
.
As you can see from PHOTO 3 of Label (enlarge to fullest) the track listing for SIDE 1 is the same as the offiicial release; but on SIDE 2 (Photo 2) the tracks "Indian Intro/JNH Solo/E-Minor Shuffle" and "Transaxual" are listed in place of the usual "Tandoori", "Borealis", "E-Minor Shuffle" and "Slippin' Away II". The last track title, "Amuseum" remains the same as the official release.
.
*AFTER THIS TEST PRESSING, a next generation C.E.S. PREVIEW package exists, but with the OFFICIALLY RELEASED, normal Track Listing on the labels, yet still crediting "James Newton Howard Quintet" and a slightly more sophisticated cover. That one appears from time to time, and was obviously the one distributed at the C.E.S. Convention.
.
I have NEVER seen this test pressing version before -from a collection of other Audiophile albums I acquired from an industry executive's estate.
.
PERSONNEL
James Newton Howard -synthesizers
David Paich -synthesizers, grand piano
Steve Porcaro -synthesizers
Jeff Porcaro -drums
Joe Porcaro -percussion
.
Highly recommended for Audiophile collectors, keyboard players, Toto fans or drummers who dig Jeff Porcaro. Some of his best work is on the album.
.
TRACK LISTING for this Test Pressing:
SIDE 1
1. Caesar (3:23)
2. Gone Buttlefishin'
3. She
4. L'Daddy
(Same as listed on official 1984 release of "James Newton & Friends")
.
SIDE 2
1. Indian Intro/JNH Solo/E-Minor Shuffle
2. Transaxual
3. Amuseum
(Tracks 1 and 2 are completely different than official release,
Track 3 is much longer than the same-named track on official release)
You may never see this Test Press C.E.S. Preview LP again.
Don't wait on this one!
