James Joyce reading "Anna Livia Plurabelle" an amusing rendering of an Irish washer woman's brogue! Recorded in London in 1929.
It has recently been discovered that, Anna Livia Plurabelle, the lady of the river, the heroine of one of the most impenetrable novels of the 20th century "Finnegan's Wake" that she may in fact be based upon Lucia Joyce, the disturbed daughter of James Joyce, the secret inspiration for his last and least intelligible work, "Finnegan's Wake".
James Joyce moved to Zürich in late 1940, fleeing the Nazi occupation of France. On 11 January 1941, he underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer. While at first improved, he relapsed the following day, and despite several transfusions, fell into a coma. He awoke at 2 a.m. on 13 January 1941, and asked for a nurse to call his wife and son before losing consciousness again. They were still en route when he died 15 minutes later.(wiki)

On October 23, 1951 the James Joyce Society met at the Gotham Book Mart. This recording was played. It was subsequently released on a 1951 Folkways Records LP.
from Spoken Records by Helen Roach, 1963: The program, on this occasion, consisted of comments and reminiscences by Joyce scholars and friends: Joseph Campbell, Padraic Colum, and Dr. Schwartz. It closed with the playing of the beautiful fragment recording by Joyce himself of "Anna Livia Plurabelle" pp. 213-216 of Finnegans Wake. Originally pressed for the Orthological Institute of Cambridge, England, the fragment, 7 minutes long, is a kind of Rosetta stone for future readers. Transcending what scholars may eventually say, it permits for everyman a basis for judgment and an experience to be remembered with awe akin to that recalled by those who saw Njinsky dance. Through it Joyce directly communicates his symphony of words. The music of spoken language, in the use of which he was no nouveau riche, has here been captured, albeit briefly, beyond the expectation and experience of most men.We hear Joyce's realization behind "...Throw your cobwebs from your eyes, woman, and spread your washing proper..." and in another vein 'Dear Dirty Dumpling../' And we wonder at the magic which can so imperceptibly open another world in the onsweeping pattern of the last section "I can't hear with the waters of... Tell me, tell me..."

Vinyl Very good to VG+, some light scuffs near outside edge on side one, very clean with most of its original shine.
