Chelsea House 2001 scarce '75 private press New Hampshire/ Vermont folk group. From Reocities.com website:

During the 1970s - the era of disco and the sensitive

singer-songwriter, when punk and heavy metal were on the rise - Jacob's Reunion was playing the folk circuit, including occasional stops at the old Chelsea House Folklore Center in West Brattleboro, Vermont. The band had a quirky sound. They played both traditional material and a fine collection of original songs. And wouldn't you know, some crazy fool came up with the idea that Jacob's Reunion should record an album.

A reel-to-reel analog tape recorder turned up next to the Chelsea House stage, and Jacob's Reunion arrived at about the same time. The place crackled with energy. Toward the end of the recording sessions, the band gave an outstanding concert. Who could forget John Coster fronting the group or the little dance Barbara Hyde did while seated on her piano bench. Then there was Yosef Oxenhandler on violin. Back in those days, you could build a band around someone named Yosef Oxenhandler even if he couldn't play or sing; but, in fact, his versatile playing was central to the group's sound. Richard Block, a fine bass player, also employed tympani to great effect. Sandy Sayers sang many of the leads; and her voice and Coster's blended unusually well.

It was a great time that I would remember fondly even if little more came of it. But the oddest thing happened. Jacob's Reunion (LP, Chelsea House, 1975) proved to be a real gem. It still sparkles, a quarter of a century later. The album has excellent songs sung very well, along with fine instrumentation and solid sound quality courtesy of Bill Gehman's engineering. Play the old Carter Family recording of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." Then listen to this version. Jacob's Reunion stripped the song down to its bare lyrical framework and completely rebuilt everything else. Their performance is slow, haunting, and eight minutes long. It was very popular at the time and has held up really well to repeated listenings.

"If I Could See You Clearly" is as good as songwriting gets. It's risky to say such a thing to those of us of the rock era, because it tends to bring to mind an over-the-top masterwork by some deranged genius.
Jacob's Reunion had an eccentric style. On "Solid Night," in the place where a bridge might normally be, comes an instrumental interlude that is somewhat like a second movement of a short symphony. After that, the singers pick up the refrain, "Time's on my mind again." At the close, the voices come together beautifully, adding strength to an already powerful performance.
Other highlights include "Morning Song," "Ontario," the instrumental "Towne Crier Reel," and a great version of the traditional "Give the Fiddler a Dram."
