Label Conditions: Both immaculate and rarely will this elusive album be seen like this. Very clean, incredibly fresh and attractive with only one or two very light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Scarce and rare in this type of condition. With a very thin and flimsy cover, this will seldom be seen or offered with less wear. This is an exceptional one.

Brief Info: A Birmingham based psych-pop band that went a measured way of introducing the world to the talents of Jeff Lynne. This was their second album, and despite good reviews at the time, it failed to sell at all well. This factor left Lynne frustrated and he left the band to team-up with former brief member Roy Wood with his Move band. Just one Lynne-less album followed that faired even less well and the band folded. This self-titled album is a gem with it’s genre, very sort-after and it helped lay down the foundations of the huge commercial success that was to follow with The Electric Light Orchestra after his stint with The Move. The early talent of Lynne and his band are beautifully encaptured within this superb example that will delight most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single, very thin and flimsy unlaminated cover with fine surface texturing and matt finish. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: A hugely impressive front for a particularly delicate cover. Any blemishes are few, light and small. A small chip on the bottom edge towards the left corner (look hard), a little corner tip rubbing (very minor in context) and fine crease near the top right corner (shows little). That’s about it. The artwork is simply magnificent, fresh and barely worn at all. The lack of rubbing and creasing is amazing with such a soft surface and there is barely any hint of speckle at all. All the texturing is little short of immaculate, any that may appear on my picture simply is NOT present, this is simply my camera flash highlighting the very subtle raised areas of the texturing. With no record impression or ringwear, this magnificent front sets the bar very high indeed.

Cover Back: As gorgeous as the front truly is, incredibly, the back is even better. With a swathe of rich, deep blue colour and barely even a hint of any rubbing or creasing, when was the last time one of these hit the open market looking little short of as made? Ringwear? – What ringwear?

Top Edge: A light mild rubbing towards the corner ends but little else. This edge is very thin indeed.

Bottom Edge: Light to moderate (in places) patchy rubbing. Again very thin and being the traditional storage edge, how many will not have modest rubbing here?

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild indeed, hardly any in fact. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and any ageing or wear modest. The ends are nipped in manufacture and these very vulnerable areas have text printed on them. Hence, very few will ever retain it here. Well apart from the loss of most of the ‘S’ in ‘LBS’ and the first digit of the Cat. No. (8), all the rest IS present and strong too. The full word ‘LIBERTY’ is totally present on the bottom nipped end. The centre has the title and totally unworn and fully present. Given just how fragile this spine and cover is in general, this is impressive.

Corners: The corner tips have rubbed, but only modestly so really. All retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. My grading of a little over excellent is conservative and cautious – such fragile sleeves must be taken in context and few will even get close to this beauty. Unless nigh-on impossible ‘perfection’ is wanted, this beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the original Polydor lined inner is included with only minimal hints of ageing. That in the form of very light discolouration and modest glue darkening on the seams. The lining is very clear indeed as seen through two immaculate window circles that remain crisp and neat. Any creasing very light indeed and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly for the connoisseur collector, this is date-coded 1/0570 which emphasises how early this copy is.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): and they will rarely be seen better than this. A supreme visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface marks minuscule, ultra light and faint and finding any at all, even under direct intense angled light proved difficult. Such records that have probably not seen light-of-day for decades, often acquire inner bag rash - Polydor inners one of the prime suspects – but this record has avoided it. I do not grade any record I know to be played Mint, but was fairly tempted on this one. Visually a stunning record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Liberty record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, any traces beyond gentle and infrequent and this being played on one of the world’s most revealing turntables. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
