Holy Grail Vogue Picture Record R-715 Collector's Dream
Highest valued of the 78 rpm Vogue picture discs in excellent condition

In a Nutshell
R-715 (1946) P17: "Waitin' For The Train" / P18: "I Can't Begin To Tell You"

Billboard [Magazine] March 30, 1946: "The Vogue disks are unlike anything currently peddled on the market, in that they are made of a coating of transparent vinylite, under which is a heat resistant paper disk, on which is printed a picture, illustrating the story of the title and lyrics of the song." Vogue Records were produced for only 11 months from May 6, 1946 on, by Sav-Way Industries of Detroit, Michigan, as the brainchild of inventor and entrepreneur Tom Saffady. Vogue records feature dance bands of the time, with bandleaders Clyde McCoy, Art Kassel, Art Mooney, Shep Fields, Frankie Masters, Sonny Dunham, Enric Madriguera, Dick LaSalle and others. Today's collectors have the choice between 74 double-sided 10" 78 rpm records (and 9 albums), of which the first one R 707 (Sugar Blues / Basin Street Blues) is also the most common one. At any given time there are about 40 R 707 for sale on eBay, with prices between $5-50. The three highest prices ever paid for a Vogue 78 rpm picture record were all three for Vogue R 715, the last one 6 years ago for US$10,003 (44 bids). If price is a measure of rarity, R 715 is the rarest of all Vogue picture records. Details at ref.2.

The two sides of record R 715 are : Waitin' For The Train To Come In (matrix P 17) / I Can't Begin To Tell You (matrix P 18). Performers are bandleader Shep Fields [1910-1981] with his orchestra and vocalist Meredith Blake [1917-1985] . The record is in excellent condition: no edge chips, no cracks or hairlines, no visible deep scratches, no warping, no discolorations, not a "factory reject", not a "second", no handwritten matrix and take numbers, translucent edge without milky whitening or yellowing. Both sides play fine without skips, repeats or annoying periodic crackles, with only moderate sizzling background. This sizzling is caused by dust particles inside the grooves and can be reduced by cleaning the record and optimizing the tip size of the gramophone needle. Q: Is this record a reproduction or an original 1946 Vogue record?
A: Reproduction Vogue records have been made around 2000, by Bear Family Records GmbH in Germany (about 17 R-numbers, see https://www.bear-family.de/bear-family/vogue-bildschallplatten/). Aside from the fact, that this were 10" 45 rpm records, I contacted Bear Family about the rare ones (R-711, R-713, R-715, R-784). Here is what Bear's Sandra Wohlers answered: "R-711 und R-713 und R-784 haben wir reproduziert. R-715 haben wir nicht reproduziert" (We reproduced R-711 and R-713, and R-784. We did not reproduce R-715).
