The discographical grading code that was adopted before WW II by pre LP collectors was designed

both to prevent misrepresentation, which was prevalent even then, but to

also get a clear definition of consistent usage of terms used to describe the

condition of 78 rpms, that are still actively traded by the purist genre.

Today, the wasted effort going into sending back records the buyer doesn't like

is just as big a turn off now as it was in 1933.  We have tons of good records,

and NdJ wants every buyer to get a good mint, near mint record, or in the case of

"As-Is" condition lps, where the musical interest of the LP is strong to

collectors of jazz music, a balance of fair price based on the degree of

usability left (how good is it?) and the degree of how extra usage detracts

from its usual value (how bad is it?). These "as-is" records are all still fun to listen to on

good equipment, or they won't be offered.

(May you hope for Fair Skys for your flying stylus, no turbulence in the undisturbed grooves of your vinyl)

N or N/NM  - grooves are undisturbed, never breathed on record surface, cleaned to remove any miniature cosmic debris.

NM/N-a virtually unmarked disc, that has had careful and considerate usage.

N-the traditional good enough to keep, never have to replace it condition. 

 Literally meant, this grade defines the idea that minimally invasive paper marks, fingernail

marks, and slight smudges from usage don't have any audio effect (emphasis provided)---

IF THE RECORD IS CLEANED WITH PROPER CARE.

EX+-this quality of condition record has been played quite a few times, but no blunt force

collisions with sharp speeding styluses have occurred. A tick or a pop, even a few repeated

seconds of surface noise can occur on this quality level. But the slight interruptions in microgroove

continuity are far outweighed by the musical enjoyment offered to the listener. A groovy sounding LP.

EX=A record still excellent sonically, with no shearing or clipped tones, cleaned to the

microscopic level, will play revealingly to most levels of audio intelligence,

with light background surface noise possible.

Other-records with below average to average surface wear condition-if useful

musically, they will find a home. Many astute bargains are to be had in the VG+/EX range

due to advances in audio cleaning/restoration.
