JUDY HENSKE & JERRY YESTER Farewell Aldebaran LP. Original 1968 US pressing on Zappa’s label, Straight Rds (STS 1052 stereo) of this great psychedelic / acid folk jewel. Gatefold sleeve is in NM condition (just a very slight cut corner in the lower right corner, see photo. Wax is in M- condition, looks like new, played only a few times. I got this copy from a Zappa fan, who bought this one in SS condition, played it once to put on CDR and stored the record immediatly ina " discwasher " VRP sleeve (which will be offered with the record). All in all, nothing but a KEEPER copy of this incredible record. Here’s a few reviews from the always great ACID ARCHIVES pages as appetizers : " This album’s inclusion in Ritchie Unterberger’s first book sent collectors scurrying everywhere, trying to dig up lost copies. Too bad he hadn’t written about some of those lame psych albums that no dealer can get rid of instead. That would have caused a laugh or two. While FAREWELL ALDEBARAN’s reputation has become a little overstated in the wake of the book, it still stands up as one of the better and most creative folk/psych albums of the period. Henske made the transition from her earlier career as a comedian/folk singer/torch singer to a rock singer with no problem at all. She has an amazing talent, and her throat-ripping vocal on the opening “Snowblind” is an eye-opener. That particular singing style is not revisited, but from bubblegummy pop (“Horse On A Stick”) to morbid dirge (“Rapture”) to psychedelic hoedown (“Raider”) to wicked social commentary (“St. Nicholas Hall,” which portrays the church as a money-grubbing enterprise, and closes with a brilliant wash of out-of-key vocal mellotron) to a completely unexpected electronic freakout (the closing title track), this album really shows what can happen when willingness to experiment is high and talent is ripe. A few songs in the middle don’t really live up to the rest, which is what keeps this from being an eternal masterpiece, but still it’s close. Henske and Yester’s next collaboration, as “Rosebud,” would sadly show little of the inspiration of this album. [AM] " Here’s by the way what Unterberger’s wrote about this LP : "Success is a matter of luck as well as talent. Given different circumstances, Henske could have certainly been a much bigger star than she was. Instead she's a hazily remembered figure, known if at all for some recordings that faintly prefigured folk-rock, and tangential associations with more famous performers. Her strong, bold, and versatile delivery would have been well-suited for the folk-rock era; her timing was just a bit off...........She finally got her chance to blossom on the 1969 LP Farewell Aldebaren, a collaborative effort with Jerry Yester that appeared on Frank Zappa's Straight! label (an association that probably arose because Henske and Zappa were both managed by Herbie Cohen). The album was a wildly eclectic, impressive effort that showcased an astonishing range of vocal delivery on Henske's part, and owed more to psychedelic music than folk. The enigmatic production was reminiscent of some of Van Dyke Parks and Brian Wilson's more adventurous work. Baroque music filtered through acid-colored glasses, its shimmering textures coat an uneasy restlessness.
