Label/Format: Straight: with matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. Pressed in the UK by CBS, this has the ring ridge and bevel.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate, pretty much as-made. Very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule. This appears little played and superbly pressed, not always the case for Straight records.

Brief Info: A one-off album by the then husband and wife Judy Henske and Jerry Yester on Frank Zappa’s new fledgling Straight label. An impossible album to pigeon-hole, this is incredibly varied, eclectic and a little ‘out-there’. It sold in minimal numbers, especially in the UK where copies are scarce and elusive. Apart from the late DJ John Peel, this got next to no airplay and went largely unnoticed. Probably purchased by a few Frank Zappa fans simply by connection via the Straight label. Straight and Bizarre Records were labels Zappa created to give lesser-known, or new artists a chance to record their music without constraints or pressure to make huge sums of money, or please major record labels. Most were uncommercial and some just plain weird, all had a free reign to do what they wanted. Only a tiny few became successful or sold in any numbers. Straight proved a launch pad for Alice Cooper and bought more attention to the avant garde blues legend Captain Beefheart, Zappa’s old school friend. A small few became cult favourites, like this one, but the majority came-and-went unnoticed. This a magnificent and fun album to play, in some ways, quite ahead of its time with early use of synthesisers and effects. Clearly Zappa was a fan, and I doubt if ths album would have ever seen light-of-day if not for him and the Straight label. This is a full UK pressing with E. J. Day Group sleeve. There is some spine wear and a smallish sticker tear (‘improved’ by a previous owner), but overall, this is a very fine cover. The record is superbly pressed by CBS and plays with hardly anything of note to fault. I have heard a few disappointing pressings of this record – but this is NOT one of them – it plays great. For fans of ‘different’ and ‘alternative’ music, this mini classic is sure to please. The first copy of this I have had to offer in ages.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: a really difficult one to grade overall, as most is really impressive, but with some edge issues and a coloured-in sticker mark on the front. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: It actually makes a change to be able to offer a UK copy of this album, as stated above, most seen are American imports with saw cuts, corner cropping or drill holes. UK originals are elusive and made in only very small numbers before being quickly deleted. Overall, the front is superb, and this is very prone to wear. There is a smallish sticker tear mark near the top right corner, on the right edge. Clearly the previous owner was fussy, and decided to colour in the exposed card to make is less visible –and being honest, it has worked to some degree. The same for the bottom right corner tip which is really tiny. That apart, the front is very impressive. Clean, vibrant and fresh with minimal traces of creasing, any other marks few and light, again near the sticker area. Apart from my own copy, I have seen few better than this.

Cover Back: Very little to fault at all on this wear-prone surface, the lack of rubbing and ring wear are considerable pluses.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically nothing to fault at all, very impressive indeed.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with little wear.

Bottom Edges: Again straight, there has been some enhancement to the front right area, neat but noticeable when viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The top fold and some surface had rubbed and again appears enhanced. Still quite solid, straight but a little flattened. It has been folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Some text has eroded.

Corners: Some moderate natural corner rubbing, a tiny touch-in on the front bottom right tip. Reasonably fine shape mostly retained.

Cover Summary: With some wear and enhancements, mainly to the lower and spine edges, and a small sticker tear, this is not for the more discerning collectors. That said, this UK-manufactured cover is elusive, and the main areas still look really nice as seen. The impressive record will make up for cover issues for many, and for me anyway, there is nothing more important than the record and its sound. On that basis, this copy will please many.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner.The paper has moderately darkened with age, but has hardly any creasing, a couple of neat edge splits. The window circle is crisp and neat with no damage.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonder one-off Straight album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. No inherent pressing noises either, this is a complex album with some challenging sounds and vocals, all totally focused, precise, sharp and clear, a delight to listen too. Few copies will outperform this rarer UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, the cover may have some issues, but the record has little to fault at all. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This disc will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
