Groundbreaking electronic music album from dutch pioneer composers Henk Badings & Dick Raaijmakers. Early electronic music from the 50's (1952-1958).

Some info on the release:  This is the original dutch pressing from the Philips label from the 60's, in the same "new music" series where appeared also the legendary Panorama des Musiques Experimentales compilation (Henri Pousseur, Gyorgy Ligeti, Luciano Berio, Bruno Maderna, Luc Ferrari, Francois Dufrene). The three Badings contributions cover a wide expanse, beginning with a violin-based electro-acoustic piece and continuing with a pair of oscillator-heavy wig outs, one for quadraphonic sound (rendered all the way down to a paltry stereo here) and the other boasting use of every possible piece of equipment in Philips (sine wave generators, sawtooth generator, noise generator, pulse generators, modulators, filters, reverberation apparatus, concrete sound sources!). Raaijmakers, by contrast, offers a brief push-pull study beginning in a fairly conventional structure that ascends to some of the drastic and wild jump-cuts that earned Raaijmaker the love of kids and adults alike.

Badings was a geologist and composer who studied under Willem Pijper and worked with Dick Raaijmakers and Tom Dissevelt at the Philips electronic music studio in Eindhoven (which he founded); His works of the 1930s and early 1940s are in a sombre, polyphonic style owing something to Pijper, but his harmony became brighter and his tone more playful. He changed direction again c 1952 when he began to use electronic resources, for instance in the radio opera Orestes (1954) and the wholly electronic ballet Kain (1956). He experimented with microtonal scales and was among the very first electronic music pioneers during the 1950s and 60s along with Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Herbert Eimert, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Vladimir Ussachevsky. Kox and Ridout were both students of Badings. Bruynel belongs to the "league" of western Europe composers that experimented with the electronic medium during the 70's such as Andre Almuro, Bernard Parmegiani, Ralph Lundsten, Mauricio Kagel, Krzysztof Penderecki, Iannis Xenakis and others.  

Raaymakers studied the piano at the Royal Conservatoire (The Hague). From 1954 to 1960 he worked in the field of electro-acoustic research at Royal Philips Electronics Ltd. in Eindhoven. There, using the alias Kid Baltan, he and Tom Dissevelt, under the name Electrosoniks produced works of popular music by electronic means (which turned out to be the first attempts of their kind in the world). From 1960 to 1962 he then worked at the University of Utrecht as a scientific staff member. From 1963 to 1966, together with Jan Boerman, he worked in his own studio for electronic music in the Hague. Then, from 1966 until his retirement in 1995, he worked as a teacher of Electronic and Contemporary Music at the Royal Conservatoire (The Hague) and since 1991 also as a teacher of Music Theatre at the Image and Sound Interfaculty, at the same conservatory. Raaymakers’ oeuvre covers a wide variety of genres and styles, varying from sound animations for films to extremely abstract pulse structures, from “action music” to infinite voice patterns, from electro-acoustic tableaux vivants to extracts of music theatre. He is considered as someone who combines disciplines such as visual art, film, literature and theatre with the world of music. Raaymakers has created numerous electronic compositions, “instructional pieces” for string ensembles, phono-kinetic objects, “graphic methods” for tractor and bicycle, “operations” for tape, film, theatre, percussion ensemble, museum and performance, artworks for offices and conservatory, and many soundscape compositions and music theatre productions, including some for the Holland Festival and for theatre company Hollandia.

Condition: Vinyl lies in very good+ condition, with a rather deep mark on one side and some light "hairline" marks here and there. Cover lies in only good condition, the Piet Mondrian stuck-on cover is damaged (see photo) and the cover has some mold stains on the inside of the gatefold.
