Description
This is the RARE, and less often seen, version that was given away free with the purchase of Head and Shoulders or Gleem (refer to picture - upper right corner of front cover). It also has the SPECIAL OFFER back cover.
This one is real nice shape and is still sealed. When I purchased it 35 years ago, it was wrapped in a mylar sleeve which has helped to preserve it over the years.
HISTORY: Hip-Pocket Records were 4-inch, 45-rpm, flexible phonograph records manufactured by Philco. Philco also produced portable players for the discs, but they could also be played on manual Phonographs.
Philco teamed with three major record companies, Atlantic, Mercury and Roulette, to produce music for them, and around 50 titles were released. They were sold for 69 cents at Woolworth, and also at local Ford Dealers and came in colorful packaging that was significantly larger than the disc itself.
By 1969, the development of the compact cassette and ultimately the Sony Walkman put pay to the pocket-sized flexi-disc and its short-lived dream of a portable vinyl for the world. Now no more than a footnote in the history of music, these little oddities and their amusing advertising campaigns do have a certain naïve charm.
