Description
I'm selling my personal collection of rare 60s and 70s modern British jazz over the next few weeks. This really was a golden age for British jazz and these are LPs I bought in the 70s and have had ever since. This auction is for Greek Variations but please see below for the others and check out my other items for concurrent auctions including Black Marigolds by Michael Garrick on auction now.
Greek Variations. Neil Ardley, Ian Carr, Don Rendell.
EMI Columbia Lansdowne SCX 6414 Stereo
Recorded 1969, a masterpiece of British Jazz with changing moods from soothing to exciting and in my opinion equalled only by the very different Shades of Blue. Neil Ardley at his brilliant best and the work of Don Rendell and Ian Carr is unsurpassed. One beautiful track after another on what seems like too much to fit on one LP. You can find much longer appraisals of this album all over the web as it's so highly regarded and sought after that it's been talked about for years.
Side 1 - The Greek Variations.
Side 2 - Wine Dark Lullaby, Orpheus, Persephone's Jive, Farewell Penelope, Odysseus king Of Ithaca, Sirens' Song, Veil Of Ino.
Neil Ardley, director.
Ian Carr, trumpet, flugelhorn.
Don Rendell, tenor and soprano sax, alto flute, clarinet.
Barbara Thompson, alto and soprano sax, flute.
Karl Jenkins, oboe, baritone and soprano sax.
Mike Gibbs, trombone.
Frank Ricotti, vibes, marimba, percussion.
Jeff Clyne, bass.
Jack Bruce, bass, bass guitar.
Brian Smith, tenor and soprano sax.
Chris Spedding, guitar.
Stan Robinson, tenor sax, flute.
Neville Whitehead, bass.
John Marshall, drums.
Trevor Tomkins, drums.
Jack Rothstein, violin.
Kelly Isaacs, violin.
Kenneth Essex, viola.
Charles Tunnell, cello.
Amaryllis Flemming, cello.
Sleeve excellent, laminated front, no splits. Vinyl, track one of side two has a short but deep scratch which makes an audible click for about 10 revs. Otherwise vinyl is excellent, light surface scuffs only, light suface noise only. Labels clean with light spindle marks only. Original inner sleeve.
