The Fountains had been together less than two weeks when they recorded their first 45, “That’s the Way I Am.” “It was an original tune by Danny and Duke and Cyril, and I think Don helped write it too,” said Miceli. The B-side was a cover of “Well Alright” by Buddy Holly. The record was cut in the same Lafayette garage where Miceli had recorded with Dale and Grace. Ultimately they would record about a half dozen 45s, the most notable being “Countin’ the Steps.” Most were recorded at Cosimo Matassa’s fabled studio on Governor Nicholls Street in the French Quarter.

It was March 26 (1965) before they took the stage as the Greek Fountains. Legend has it that the name was a euphemism for a frat-boy pastime known as hurling, but on that Miceli pleads the Fifth. “I wasn’t there when the name was created,” he said. “I was embarrassed to say Greek Fountains, because it seemed so weird to me. Most bands were named the Corvairs or the Corvettes or the Playboys. We had a radical, far-out name.”

When The Beatles overran rhythm and blues, (Duke)Bardwell and his friends traded their flat tops for "long hair and Madras pants," he remembers, and formed The Greek Fountains, a rock band combining rhythm & blues and British standards for a unique blend of popular styles. The Greek Fountains toured the Southeast, and Mercury Records released the band's single, "Countin' the Steps", which received considerable regional airplay. Back home, joined by fellow singers Butch Hornsby and Big Luther Kent, the band cut an album for Montel Records, "The Greek Fountains’ Riverfront Band Takes Requests."

It was an exciting era. The Greek Fountains opened concerts in New Orleans, Jackson, Ms. and Mobile, Ala. for The Animals, The Dave Clark Five, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and Sonny and Cher. He also played with the Basement Wall, another popular regional band, prior to taking flight for the Northeast in the late sixties. (various sources)
