Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and attractive with barely any spindle marks, the one mark seen on my scan is a manufacture mark NOT a spindle mark.

Cat Number: 2WS 1830.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 130 / 121 grams.

Rarity: Rare as a US first pressing. This initially included a 4-page, single fold insert that was never seen elsewhere. Here included in nigh-on pristine condition. Also with two US-style inners that look similar in style to the UK ‘Head Hunter’s’ inner, again both included and not just, both in impossibly rare near mint condition with no splits or tears. Immensely difficult finding two barely played records and a cover unsplit with the main faces in superb condition. There is some corner scuffs and rubs, but finding these vintage US classic covers still looking so strong is a very difficult ask. For many serious collectors, the US originals for US bands remain the ultimate pressings to own – when complete in such fine conditions, they are rare and seldom seen outside America. This geniune and totally complete set is one of the rarest ‘Dead’ albums available.

Brief Info: The band’s first live album and how could they resist this title? Overall, their fourth album and one of their most cherished by ‘Dead-Heads’, the name given to their fans of the day. Many consider it a masterpiece of stoned improvisation, note the back cover top area spells out the word ‘ACID’, the slang term for LSD. With trademark long tracks including the classic opener ‘Dark Star’, this includes stunning front cover artwork. This was issued on 10th November 1969 (my birthday as a by-the-way) and in the US on the deep olive green labels and included the very rare insert lyric booklet. The UK version initially came on the Warner orange format but never included the elusive and prized insert. I think the icing on the cake is the inclusion of the two US inner sleeves, both here in supreme, little short of new condition. A set hardly played and sounding great on very clean records. Any surface sounds minor and few and most all play as issued back in 69. Some mild surface marks are almost impossible to avoid on US imported records, but they are totally superficial and finding this complete set better, especially outside the US will prove immensely difficult.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Unprotected double sets usually means often severe ringwear and rubbing, and US versions are more prone still with edge splits an extra hazard on that thick card.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. An unlaminated gatefold format made with thick heavyweight card with the paste-on style centrefold panel. Printed in the USA, includes the very rare insert lyric booklet and both inner sleeves.

Cover Front: This looks unusually fine and lack any ringwear or rubbing. Any marks are few and the artwork looks stunning with rich vibrant colour retained with no fading or creasing on the main areas. Most of any wear seen is on the corners which rubbed or scuffedd with a little inkloss and tip creasing. Few US covers avoid this as the barest possible minimum, but all the positives of the incredible artwork outweight any light corner area negatives.

Cover Back: All the corners bar the bottom right show little wear on this side. The exception has a surface scuff so appears white. Again the back shows little wear to the fragile surfaces with again, no ringwear or major rubbing. Some very fine hairline type surface marks are seen more under light, but given all the facts – age, format and country of origin – both front and back look pretty exceptional. Note the cleverly disguised ‘ACID’ graphic at the top.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very slight traces of set-off, this being ultra critical, a lovely middle with little to fault.

Top Edges: Some lightish patchy rubbing, most near the corner areas.

Bottom Edges: More rubbing that the top but in context for US resting edges, still mild. The ends shows a little more with some stressing to the front right end that has a small surface split that has not penetrated through. It is clearly obvious over time, it’s best to keep the records outside of US-made covers to protect the more brittle card. These types are seldom seen intact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean and sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is present and practically unworn. The very ends a little gnarled but these are totally unforgiving and rarely escape wear.

Corners: All corners have rubbed with some light tip creases. Some scuffing and mildly untidy but intact and all considered, in reasonable shape and condition.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this beautiful, but wear-prone late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better as a US original. If some mildish corner-wear can be tolerated, the rest looks lovely and should please most realistic collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: MINT(-): and little short of full Mint. The two unlined inners, that look very similar in design to the UK ‘Head-Hunter’s’ inner are in truly stunning conditions. How they have survived four decades with unsplit edges is a minor miracle. Both ultra clean and fresh with any creasing or wrinkle minimal. These are a mirror-image pair and promote artists of the day. These add an extra class and feel to this vintage Dead album.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(-): and little short of full Mint again. A single fold booklet measuring 11 x 8.5 inches. This is clean, fresh with few visual blemishes and no creasing, all edges razor-sharp. A guaranteed original, NOT a repro, my first one ever, this is a very elusive insert that was NOT made available with the UK version.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and in real terms undergraded as such. It is very difficult to put a definitive grading on imported US albums because their surfaces seem ‘softer’ than UK pressings. Hence they mark even in transit and even though these records have hardly been played, they still show the typical dulled surface marks that’s a simply trait of US records. There are NO scratches, simply movement friction scuffs that have NO sound at all. So happy to state, both records are in superb condition, clean and solidly pressed and offer that definitive sound only the first US pressings do. That is why they are still the connoisseur’s choice. Visually strong records, most experienced collectors will know what to expect and most will appreciate how fine they are.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play above their high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, a trace of brief crackle was noted on one tiny segment but no pops or clicks were noted. How many 40-year-old imported originals will offer better sound overall than this pair will be few, and how many will be made available with two near mint inners and that prized lyric insert? Few copies will outperform this still early issues I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these excellent records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
