Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of three very fine, light and faint spindle marks. This superb heavy repress looks hardly played and plays beautifully.

Cat Number: K 46027 (the cover is the original WS 1790 with a sticker on the back for the first new Kinney pressing).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good weight for this 1971 pressing.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Rare: a commercial non-starter and any early UK copy are always hard to find. With one of the greatest psych covers of the 60s (please check out the amazing details in close-up), this is stoned-out and experimental Grateful Dead as their very best. Also, this still has the ORIGINAL mix sound. This was changed in September 1971 making green label copies very rare indeed that still have the first sound. Almost certainly only around for around six to eight months before the change. An easy test for this, is on the song ‘Mountains of the Moon’ – the first mix has a female backing chorus – this was subsequently removed from the remixed version. Other tracks sound different and significantly so on ‘What’s Become of the Baby’, the bizarrest track on the album. The remix removes the electronic weirdness and the voice becomes clearer. The classic original is just plain weird, intense and unsettling, most ‘Dead Heads’ prefer the original mix of the album and it’s here. Do not assume all green label copies are the same, they are not.

Brief Info: Pronounced OX-OH-MOX-OH-AH this was the band’s third album and now at their most experimental. This is not a commercial album and at times is quite ‘out-there’ – just listen to the psych weirdness of ‘What’s Become of the Baby’, one of the best ‘stoned-out’ classics put to record. The whole album has an unsettling effect and from the outset had little hope of commercial success. The Grateful Dead were never as popular in the UK as their native US and sales were never that impressive here, hence the difficulty in finding the early albums in fine conditions. This copy plays superbly, and overall has that strange eerie deliberate low-fi psych sound only available on the early mixes. Clearly Warner were still using up the first issue covers on the first Kinney copies, thus the sticker on the back. A beautiful cover too and one of the late 60s classics. The band name in large letter towards to the top, when viewed slanted appears to spell out ‘WE ATE THE ACID’, as can possibly be seen on my close-up picture. Both cover and record are in super condition and this copy has the ORIGINAL mix, prior to being remixed in September 1971.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front lamination. This covers all the closed folds and ends on three external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse (the credit almost hidden by the spine edge flipback, which is wider than usual), and includes the original WS 1790 number on the back and spine. The back sticker strangely includes BOTH the K 46027 new Kinney number along with the WS number.

Lamination & Front: One of my favourite 1960s covers: colorful and very out-there, it has regularly been voted in the Top 10 best covers of all-tine polls. This front does it superb justice with shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has barely any lifting – a couple of small spots on the top and bottom of the spine edge. Even under light, minimal traces of any dulling and the lack of creasing always a welcome bonus, any present are tiny, faint and very few at all. The bottom right corner has a rub but little else detracts from the colourful classic front.

Cover Back: The main unprotected back panel has a little very mild grubbiness near the left edge, but few will show less. Barely any creasing and no ring wear, rubbing or even rim impression. The three flipbacks are solid and crisp with just a couple of fine laminate creases only. All ends are clean with no grime lines and practically burr-free. The somewhat unusual dual number stickerer has only lightly aged but have clearly never been removed or picked at. Apparently amongst the group and people on the back artwork, is a very young Courtney Love.

Top Edge: Very straight with full laminate and barely any hint of wear up to the very ends.

Bottom Edge: As above with just small rubs to the ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring very light as mostly seen viewed end-on. As stated above, a rub on the bottom corner on the front. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A very nice spine indeed and it includes the original WS 1790 number only. Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. A little small tip creasing to the ends.

Corners: A moderate rub on the bottom right and a small tip crease on the top left. Fine to very fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this very colourful late 60’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors with only gentle clues given to it’s considerable age.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner with two near pristine window circles. Hardly any creasing and aged little. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy that appears played very little with just a few very fine and light surface marks on side one and very little at all on two. Little more than paper blemishes that have barely any affect on the very clean sound of this somewhat strange album. A rare green label copy that plays the first mix, this worth reitterating again as it will not be seen often – it should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful acid-psych album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. It has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is quite unusual with a strange mix which I guess was quite deliberate. This was later remixed, so the early issues are the only way to hear this in it’s original form, and it seems most fans prefer it the way it was. Any surface sounds are few, very light and faint and this really does have some very quiet moments but plays with little unwanted. Few copies will match or outperform this still very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, spaced-out album. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. In this form, one of the rarest UK Grateful Dead albums.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
