Recorded in the hours before the assassination of President Kennedy (literally: the album was recorded on November 21, 1963) , this document foretells the haywire mood of the times with a sound that floats between waking and dreaming. The final of a suite of three 1963 albums featuring Moncur with Jackie McLean and Bobby Hutcherson preceded by McLean's twin LPs "One Step Beyond" and "Destination... Out!" which tinkered with avant jazz enabled by Moncur's minimalist demento compositions that singularly suggested benign menace and harlequin naïveté, "Evolution" spaces out even further with a kind of chamber jazz that Dolphy would soon after expand upon with the thoroughly tasty "Out To Lunch!". The players here are liberated by the openness of the song structures and all solo expressively. McLean sizzles, free and manic but not unhinged. Lee Morgan rarely played as out as he does here, inspired by Tony Williams typically constructive and jagged drumming and Hutcherson's cinematic shape-shifting vibraphone. Bob Cranshaw on bass completes the piano-less rhythm section and together they create a harmonic climate that describes the forever maze-universe of Borges' Library of Babel. But the overall tone is defined and guided by Moncur's trombone, a forlorn and solitary sound. Occasionally he displays fleetness and élan but his true nature is introspective and ultimately unknowable. There is a gradual quicksand pull in his playing and in his music, part bop and part sober, playful then moody. The pieces never rush to a conclusion, the shortest track on the LP winds itself up at a shade under eight minutes, the title track at over twelve minutes is the longest which, shaped by one sustained tectonic whole-note per bar, is a timbral exercise in describing ancient planetary formation. Quite an achievement for a quintet of guys in a room with nothing but their acoustic instruments channeling inspiration while the tape rolls. This is the sound of waking in a darkened hall of mirrors at three in the morning without memory or orientation. Highly recommended.

One of the New Thing's extremely few trombonists and a greatly underappreciated composer of tremendous evocative power, Grachan Moncur III got his first major exposure on Jackie McLean's groundbreaking 1963 masterpiece, One Step Beyond. Toward the end of the year, most of the same musicians reconvened for Moncur's debut as a leader, Evolution; McLean, vibist Bobby Hutcherson, and drummer Tony Williams are all back, with Bob Cranshaw on bass and an extra voice in trumpeter Lee Morgan, moonlighting from his usual groovy hard bop style. While Moncur takes a little more solo space here, the main emphasis is on his talent as a composer. The four originals are all extended, multi-sectioned works (the shortest is around eight minutes), all quite ambitious, and all terrifically moody; much of the album sounds sinister and foreboding, and even the brighter material has a twisted, surreal fun-house undercurrent. Part of that is due to the accuracy with which the musicians interpret Moncur's vision. Hutcherson provides his trademark floating chordal accompaniment, which is crucial to the overall texture; what's more, the album features some of McLean's weirdest playing ever, and some of Morgan's most impressively advanced, as he makes the most of a situation he longed to be in more often. Of the pieces, "Monk in Wonderland" is the most memorable; its whimsical, angular theme is offset by Hutcherson's mysterious vibes, which create a trippy effect in keeping with the title. "Air Raid" is alternately ominous and terrifyingly frantic, and the funereal title track keeps time only in the pulse of the horns and the backing, which is based entirely on whole notes. With such an inventive debut, it's a shame Moncur didn't record more as a leader, which makes Evolution an even more important item for fans of Blue Note's avant-garde to track down.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)           The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME  jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastylite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine and the top seam.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some tiny, faint, barely visible writing on its back side (almost completely erased and practically invisible, covering less than 1/8 square inch in area)
