GRACE SLICK AND THE GREAT SOCIETY
One of the very first San Francisco underground groups. The Great Society, played in the first dance organised
by The Family Dogg at The Longshoreman's Hall in 1965. Thereafter, they gigged regularly at the Fillmore,
the Avalon, the Matrix and Mother's. The nucleus of the group were Grace, with her unique vocals,
her husband, Darby and his brother Jerry. They recorded a single for Tom Donahue's North Beach label Someone To Love.
The first LP recorded live at the Matrix is of particular interest in that it contained an early version
of Darby's Somebody To Love and Grace's White Rabbit which The Jefferson Airplane were later
to transform into nationwide hits. However, the record company held back its release until after the group
had split and Grace had become famous. However, the group never made it nationally and when
the nucleus of the band resolved to set off for India to learn sitar music Grace was snapped up
by The Airplane who then really began to develop.
Her husband, Jerry joined another San Franscisco band, The Final Solution...(Fuzz Acid & Flowers)
