GNIDROLOG - In Spite Of Harry's Toe-Nail (RCA #SF 8261 UK 1971)

VERY RARE UK original in TOP condition / UNPLAYED

Original first UK pressing in TOP / UNPLAYED (stunning/impossible to find ??) condition with MISSPRESSED matrix numbers!!!

The first few hundred copies of this record left the pressing plant with INCORRECT matrix numbers of AGBF 8028-2 and AGBF 8029-1D
instead of the correct AGBS 0828/9 numbers – this is one of those few hundred copies !!!

The opening guitar feed-back and initial, slashing band unison (guitar, bass, drums) and aggressive vocal seem to announce an upcoming storm, but soon the staccato bass, nervously plucked clean e-guitar and jazzy recorder (Yes!) with a pulsating drive the vocal later integrates, paint a very different scene; and after a couple of intense minutes the relaxing voice over a tranquil mood of flute and recorder duet, a top gentle guitar arpeggios and sensitive bass notes, tell yet another story;

Soon it becomes clear the story being told is a subversion of the fixed rules of songwriting, treating the same lyrics with two radically different instrumentations and intensities, as if to prove anything is possible.

And indeed, so it seems: these guys can create all the atmospheres they want, from cello and flute, Baroque like reminiscences as in “Peter”, to wild free guitar, horn and oboe improvisations over a bashing rhythm section at the tail end of “Snails” or fingerpicked, Folksy inspired acoustic guitar parts as on “Who Spoke”, but always deliberately keeping the sound spectrum rather naked- overdubs don’t seem to be an option – so nothing gets lost.

Moreover, they do take their time, unhurried, slowly painting their canvas, with an approach that may seem like unfocused wandering in others, but that works in their favor with the unusually creative Gnidrolog, the constant shifts in tempo and tension, going from Pastoral to thundering and back, keeping things fresh and dynamic, with sudden changes that sometimes come brutally like a punch in the stomach, others gently like caressing Summer breezes.

Should not pass without mentioning these are extremely competent musicians, rarely bordering virtuosity but largely compensating it with an unconditional passion, and who besides their primary instruments, guitars, bass and drums, also know how to fairly use recorders, tenor sax, horns, harmonica, cello , flute, oboe or piano; with a similar passion, the Goldring brothers take care of a seductive vocal department, travelling a range that goes from the heavy growls to the delicate falsettos with multiple shades in between;

Gnidrolog may be heavy like King Crimson, sophisticated like Van der Graaf Generator, intricate like Gentle Giant, pulsating like Jethro Tull, Tudor affected like Amazing Blondel, Folksy irreverent as Roy Harper or indulge in heavy Boogie a la Led Zeppelin, without ever sounding like any of those band, due to an unique approach, responsible for a distinctive sound, attractive to the point of becoming dangerously addictive!

Oh, the irrational and healthy addiction...
