Description

This is a remarkable item - a beautiful early U.S. press of Glenn Gould’s groundbreaking and most famous recording, signed on back by the artist, along with an interesting bit of provenance that helps to confirm the signature.

The record is the classic 6-eye mono edition of The Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach (Columbia ML 6050 - stampers end in 4E/3A). It contains the original heavy cardboard inner sleeve with Gould’s liner notes, as well as what appears to be the original inner plastic bag.

Record is shiny with few signs of use other than some light scuffs. Record grades at NM-. Jacket shows light wear from age, including some discoloration and the beginning of a split at the top. Jacket grades at VG+.

The record features Gould’s distinctive script on the back of the jacket: “Best Wishes Glenn Gould 1961”. Aside from matching other examples of Gould autographs, the “Best Wishes” is a frequent inscription from authenticated autographs of the era. The writing appears to have been done with an old-style fountain pen of the era, and the ink appears to be old. Most interestingly, there is a program from a 1961 Gould appearance at Boston University, which would explain why the inscription is dated 1961.
