Revelation REV 1/2/3
GLASTONBURY FAYRE REVELATIONS: A Musical Anthology
U.K. 3 LPS from 1972
The legendary Glastonbury Fayre triple album was a lot of things -- but, with a mere handful of heroic exceptions, live at the festival itself it wasn't. Rather, when it came time to try repaying some of the event's massive debts with a benefit album, the majority of participants offered up material recorded far and wide elsewhere, with Hawkwind's contribution, a medley of "Silver Machine" and the set-closing "Welcome to the Future," being drawn from a 1972 show at London's legendary Roundhouse. At eight minutes in length, the "Silver Machine" here has surprisingly little in common with the tight, concise hit version of the song -- "surprisingly," because the hit itself was edited and mixed out of exactly the same performance. Ah, the secrets of the studio! Excellent though it is, "Silver Machine" here is a sprawling jam, the ghostly demo of its future self, but resonant enough that many fans actually prefer it to the "finished" thing. "Welcome to the Future," too, is scrappier than the familiar version, from the same year's Space Ritual live album, but it, too, packs a powerful punch -- with or without the unexpected greeting of "Hello, Eric!" that cuts through the opening moments.
In addition to Hawkwind's brilliance, the Grateful Dead offer a masterful, intense version of their signature improvisation epic "Dark Star". During their Europe '72 tour from which this performance was culled, the Dead were at the peak of their intuitive jamming powers and this is one of the best examples of that period. The rest of the 3 LP set has many more surprises including studio tracks from Pete Townshend, Marc Bolan and a live track from David Bowie and a live freakout (aptly entitled "Uncle HArry's Last Freakout") from the Pink Fairies which runs nearly 20 minutes in length. At its best, the Glastonbury Fayre album recaptures all the freedom and magnificence that the festival itself once represented.
6 panel foldout picturing the pyramid stage on one side and some hippies on the other. Also included are 2 booklets, one 32 pages long with clippings about the event and lots of photos of the bands. The other is a 4-panel foldout with details about each track on the benefit album. All of the above is housed in a plastic bag with appropriate comic book art.
The album cover has moderate wear at the folds but is not in any danger of tearing. The vinyl is in VG+/EX condition.
