Conditions : laminated cover on both sides shows a light ring wear, some moderate edge wear and slight creasing on the corners, EX / disc reveals at the listening some moderate surface noise here and there (possibly caused by static charges, friction of the stylus, dust or other irregularities). In addition vinyl has some hairlines and scuffs which affect play with some slight clicks, EX

GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED

Copertine e vinili sono visualmente gradati dopo un’attenta osservazione sotto la luce del sole fatta sulla mia terrazza a tetto. Nelle giornate grigie vengono controllati sotto una forte lampada alogena con l’aiuto di una lente d’ingrandimento. Tutti i i 33 giri in asta sono stati interamente ascoltati su un giradischi Rega Planar 3 fornito di una testina a magnete mobile Grado Statement 1. Per EP e singoli a 45 giri utilizzo un Thorens TD 166 BC con testina, sempre MM, Goldring 1006. Ritenendo che le abituali classificazioni quali Mint, Ex, Vg, ecc., ecc… siano poco significative per spiegare le reali condizioni dei dischi ed anche estremamente soggettive, precedo sempre tali classificazioni con una breve descrizione degli eventuali difetti che ho riscontrato, ad eccezione di Mint- che il più alto grado che conferisco a qualsiasi disco. Soltanto per le copie ancora sigillate all’origine utilizzo MINT/MINT.

Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All LPs in auction have been fully heard on a turntable Rega Planar 3 with a moving magnet cartridge Grado Statement 1. I listen EPs and singles 45  rpm. on a turntable Thorens TD 166 BC with a MM cartridge Goldring 1006. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.

Film ambientato in Cina durante l’ultima fase della guerra civile (1946 - 1950) ispirato dalla sua musica tradizionale alleggerita e modificata per una platea cinematografica occidentale che i produttori ritenevano di scarse conoscenze culturali o per dir meglio di “grosso palato”, trattandosi di un film non particolarmente impegnato.

Questa premessa non vuole affatto svilire il film e meno che mai la sua musica ma semplicemente dare la giusta collocazione temporale e sociologica al film per meglio comprendere le musiche che l’accompagnano. La prima cosa che sorprende in maniera sicuramente piacevole è la straordinaria forza lirica delle composizioni. L’orchestra dà il suo massimo come se fosse impegnata a vincere il premio Oscar. Così belle emozioni sonore colpiscono l’ascoltatore per le intense ed ariose melodie sinfoniche miscelate a tradizionali temi musicali Cinesi ben espressi da strumenti a corde, a fiato e percussioni, sia riflettenti stati di angoscia e paura o momenti romantici. Fra queste tracce non si può dimenticare " Sauna " con un uso delle percussioni quasi da musica d'avanguardia e dai suoni acuti di un liuto Cinese, forse un Ruanxian o un Qin.  Ma c’è assai di più. Le fughe, i disagi, le angoscie che attraversano i protagonisti del film si dissolvono improvvisamente in un incredibile cha cha cha. " Pablito " che alterna il suo tipico ritmo con brevi inserti di melodie sinfoniche e sonorità di tipo ragtime. Le sorprese non finiscono qui perché tre ottimi brani jazz sono inseriti nell’album. " You Drive Me Insane " è qui presente nella versione vocale e strumentale. Nella prima una vocalista, non accreditata sulle note di copertina e dell’etichetta, interpreta da consumata "jazz singer" di locale notturno la canzone in Inglese con il virtuoso accompagnamento del pianoforte, mentre nel secondo brano una piccola formazione con pianoforte, sassofono, flauto, contrabbasso e percussioni dà vita a piacevoli improvvisazioni jazzistiche con assolo di sax tenore e pianoforte. Infine il terzo brano jazz: " Night Club " condotto da un eccellente sax e con il supporto di pianoforte, contrabbasso e batteria. 

Notes : music composed by Gian Stellari and Guido Robuschi, orchestra conducted by Gian Stellari.   Film set in China during the last phase of the Civil War (1946 - 1950) and therefore inspired by its traditional music simplified and modified for a Western audience that the production considered from poor cultural knowledge or better said not fussy, being a film not particularly intellectual.   This premise does not want to devalue the movie and even less its music but simply to specify a correct temporal and socialogical placement for a better understanding about its soundtrack. The first thing surprising in enjoyable way is the extraordinary lyrical power of the compositions. The orchestra does your utmost as if it were engaged for an Academy Award. So beautiful sound emotions strike the listener for the intense and airy symphonic melodies combined with traditional Chinese musical themes well expressed by stringed instruments, wind instruments and percussion, and reflecting moods of distress and fear or romantic situations. Among these tracks cannot be forgotten " Sauna " by percussions which are similar, in part at least, to some avant-garde experimentations and from high-pitched sounds of Chinese lute, possibly Ruanxian or Qin. But there is much more to say. The escapes, the hardships, the fears crossing the film protagonists suddenly dissolve into an amazing cha cha cha. " Pablito " which alternates its characteristic rhythm with short breaks of symphonic melodies and unusual sonorities similar to rag-time. The surprises do not end here considering that three excellent jazz tunes are included in the album. " You Drive Me Insane " is present in vocal and instrumental version. In the first an uncredited but consummate female jazz artist with excellent vocal tecnique performs the song in English with a virtuous piano accompaniment, while in the instrumental version a small combo featuring piano, sax, flute, double bass and percussion creates pleasant jazz improvisations with tenor sax and piano solos. Finally, the third jazz tune: " Night Club " led by an excellent sax with the support of piano, bass and drums.
