Description

Georgy Girl is a very successful 1966 British film based on a novel by Margaret Forster. The film was directed by Silvio Narizzano and starred Lynn Redgrave as Georgy, Charlotte Rampling, Alan Bates, and James Mason. The movie also features the well known title song performed by the Seekers. It received Academy Award nominations for Lynn Redgrave, James Mason, and Best Song. There was never a soundtrack made from the movie but the popular title song is captured on the Seekers 1966 album of the same name.

The plot follows the story of a virginal woman in 1960s London who is faced with a dilemma when pursued by both her father's older employer and the young lover of her promiscuous and pregnant flatmate.

The film was the basis for an unsuccessful 1970 musical stage adaptation called simply Georgy. Book by Tom Mankiewicz, lyrics by Carole Bayer, and music by George Fischoff. After seven previews, the Broadway production opened on February 26, 1970 at the winter Garden Theatre, where it closed after only four performances. There was never a recording produced by a record label. Only a few private recordings survived to capture the live performance of the musical on stage. Here are both recordings for your purchase:
