Ferrante & Teicher – Keyboard Kapers LP
For sale today is a vinyl copy of Keyboard Kapers by Ferrante & Teicher. This is actually a 1960 re-release of Dynamic Twin Pianos, issued shortly after the album’s initial release to conform with United Artists’ “New Look.” The thing that makes this particular version so special, though, is that this cover was used as the basis for Pavement's classic album Slanted and Enchanted. Compare the two side by side and you’ll see that Pavement just scribbled out all the words and replaced them with their own. This is surprisingly a little known or unknown fact that I have never seen recited anywhere else, so consider yourself “in the know.”
It gets better, though, because this is actually a really good album. In case you’re not familiar with them, Ferrante and Teicher really made some fascinating, out-of-this-world sounds with their early albums, such as this one. There are sounds on here that you won’t believe come from a piano. It’s not hard to see why Stephen Malkmus and company would be interested in this record.
Anyway, you’re probably more interested in the details of the album’s condition. I would grade this record G/VG. The outer sleeve has a significant amount of separation at the seams, but it still holds together pretty well. Additionally, there is some ringwear and someone’s name is written lightly on the top right. The original inner sleeve, which has a neat sort of optical illusion, is present and in nice shape, though there is some separation on the bottom seam. The vinyl looks very nice, with only a few noticeable scratches, and it plays very well. Don’t miss this opportunity to own this rare piece of history!
