After 46 years, this album still sounds as good as it did in 1973. It grows on you, and the bluesy, sad lyrics reflect the turmoil that Free was going through, particularly Kossoff's drug usage. Yet despite that, the album shows a maturity in the Free sound that isn't apparent in other albums. Rodger's voice sounds great, and even though Kossoff only played on some of the tracks, his guitar style is still apparent on the remainder.

While Wishing Well is a well known track, there are no weaknesses here. Some reviews see the album as a bit disjoint, with session musicians such as Bill "Snuffy" Walden playing guitar on some tracks. However, the end product is a very memorable and moving album. There are distinct country and blues influences, and less of the pop or Top 40 material that can be associated with other Free albums. This is to my ears by far the best Free album.

These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in its original aqua-blue (turquoise) Island stock inner sleeve

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a neat, round PROMO cutout hole in one of the corners

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        A few tiny drop-like water stains noted on the back panel (less than ¼ square inch in size, total)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)
