Description

This is a very rare 1st issue copy of an early pressing of "Memories of El Monte" by The Penguins b/w "Never Let You Go" by the Five Discs (Chief 101). Released in 1963.

"Memories of El Monte," co-written by Frank Zappa long before The Mothers of Invention formed, was issued on Art Laboe's Original Sound label (as OS-27, with "Be Mine" on the flip). For some reason, however, "Memories of El Monte" was also released on the Chief label, with "Never Let You Go" by the Five Discs on the A side. The matrix numbers are (as best as I can tell) MS-852-A and MS-852-B (though these numbers have been scratched out and CH-101 etched in). A collector has informed me (thank you!) that the scratched out numbers refer to a different issue of this record, on the Million Seller label (hence the MS matrix).

Greg Russo, author of the Frank Zappa biography, Cosmik Debris, claims that the Chief label and Million Seller issues are not legitimate releases of "Memories of El Monte" because Art Laboe never licensed the song to anyone. However, there is a publisher listed on the Chief issue label: Orig. Music. Could this be a connection to Laboe's Original Sound label? On the Original Sound label issue, "Drive-In Music" is listed as the publisher. Another twist to all of this is that on the 1st Chief label issue, "Memories of El Monte" is credited to the Five Discs and Cleve Duncan is given songwriting credit and not Zappa-Collins. This error was only partly corrected in a subsequent issue of this single, which lists The Penguins as the artist, but still has Cleve Duncan as the songwriter (see photos), and--to add to the confusion--the matrix numbers are flipped.

The record up for auction here is the 1st issue, with the lighter blue label and The Five Discs listed on both sides, and with the correct matrix numbers (CH-101-A on the A side, CH-101-B on the B side). Please email me with any questions, as I know this is a bit complicated.

The record is in EX- condition. Some label wear, and a small circle in ballpoint pen on both sides, but vinyl is clean and glossy.
