Label/Format: Reprise – Dark Tan original with NO Warner logo at the 3 o’clock position, those that are listed with it are NOT originals. These have a matt and smooth finish. (please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Side one has ‘CAP’ written near the 9 o’clock position as can be clearly seen on my scan. That apart, both fresh, clean and attractive with that deeper tan finish than later ones. Each side has only two or three very fine and light spindle marks and this genuine first issue offers super sound and appears hardly even played.

Cat Number: K 44209.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A fair degree above average even for a very first issue, even slightly later ones become much thinner.

Rarity: Moderately scarce – harder as a first issue with the heavier vinyl and darker labels. Finding near mint examples – that is cover, record and sound – is difficult. This copy also includes the scarce manufacturer’s front cover sticker that were initially applied to make it clearer what the album was and by whom (this seen in close-up).

Brief Artist & Album Info: Another classic Zappa album, and this is one of his very best and in the type of condition his fans prefer. Certainly one of the most inspired albums he produced in the early 70s. This carries on the ideas on Waka/Jawaka and extends them much further with a big band of session musicians and a few of the remaining Mothers of Invention. This is a predominately instrumental set and includes some stunning solos and virtuosity. The Grand Wazoo must have surprised those who thought Zappa had gone down the road of bawdiness and wanted more of the same – this proved yet again the unpredictable nature of his albums and that was just one reason why his music and career was so fascinating. It was recorded when he was recovering from the horrendous fall from the stage at the London’s Rainbow Theatre after being pushed. This is a wonderful set, one of my personal favourites from his amazing catalogue. Big band jazz-rock, often dubbed as ‘Art Rock’, few albums I have heard sound like it. Highly rhythmical, with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, George Duke on keyboards and featuring a great Moog solo by Don Preston. An album including 22 musicians including Frank, this is brilliantly produced by the man himself and this copy plays impressively. I doubt if it had been played any more than once or twice. Something of a landmark album that provides a stepping-stone to his later complex instrumental works. The cover is astonishing, featuring stunning artwork from Cal Schenkel, this would have helped sell a few albums for those curious buyers at the time – but like most – it failed to chart. One all collectors will want near perfect and this should not disappoint, never easy being somewhat prone to all forms of wear if not treated and protected carefully, this has little to fault. The record has fine whispy surface marks when viewed under bright angled light – probably from dry-cleaning by the one-and-only previous owner – but plays very well with very little unwanted at all. For those who found a vocal Zappa a little too extreme at this time, this classic mainly instrumental set is well worth checking out – I guarantee, few will be disappointed – this is kind’a like jazz, but not as we know it – Parompa-pom-pom.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): but has small name inside on the bottom right corner area – my grading is based on wear and looks, and does NOT taking into account of this single word name – such things are purely subjective and for any potential customer to decide. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces (later ones were varnished giving them a more glossy finish). Printed in England by Howards and includes the scarce original manufacturer sticker on the front as seen in close-up.

Cover Front: Always loved the cover of this album, so much detail and work went into it and this example does it nigh-on maximum justice. Clean, fresh and very attractive with superb colour and detail. Barely anything of any real note to fault: the odd edge hairline crease or tiny rub trace (but look hard). The sticker has clearly never been removed or picked at, the top has gone a little transparent and the detail can be seen through all if viewed closely enough. This sticker is quite elusive these days, it was only applied to the very first issues and many who bought it, removed it. With this detail still fully intact, it makes this first issue copy totally complete.

Cover Back: Very similar to the front with just a couple of small and light corner creases. The lack of rubbing, grubbiness and ring wear means both front and back remain hugely attractive and never easy to find as such.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Few colours are more revealing of grubbiness than yellow – so glad to state any traces inside here are very small and light with just the odd fine crease or two. As stated further up, this has the name ‘CHARLIE’ on the bottom right corner area, this the only significant ‘blemish’ on this otherwise outstanding sleeve. All the musicians are pictured with instrument details and the text describes the ‘Legend of Cleetus Awreetus’.

Top Edges: Both dead straight and little short of as made.

Bottom Edges: Any rub traces are very small, fine and faint with most-all of the design present and clean. A mere trace on the centre of the back, again, both very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Tthe front is tucked and folded with a real edge, not cut, this is little short of pristine. The back entrance is nearly the same: very sharp, clean and crisp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A complex graphic spine that is little short of pristine. Very solid and straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel – this makes the difference between average and exceptional – this this beauty IS exceptional. Superb condition with barely even a hint of wear and up there with the very best ‘Wazoo’ spines seen yet. All text and artwork perfect and unworn, totally unaged, faded or grubby. Even the ends are neat and crisp – all details seen on my close-up pictures.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny and light and all retain excellent or better, well defined shape.

Cover Summary: A VERY impressive Grand Wazoo cover – and one of Zappa’s most spectacular and colourful, and it includes that scarce front sticker. The name inside being the only small blemish for the highly discerning collector. The amazing artwork is as complex as the music enclosed. This lovely original should still please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white, solid unlined inner. Barely aged at all with hardly creasing or discolouration. All edges solid and secure.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: very fine whispy surface marks, finer than hairlines are seen under bright angled light, without any doubt the result of dry-cloth cleaning. Totally harmless and ultra fine and barely seen at all with normal light viewing. Very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed, I feel sure this has been played little, reitterated by very clean, impressive sound.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Zappa masterwork plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full and wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Hardly any surface sound, the odd gentle brief trace at the very start of ‘Eat That Question’, but it disappears within seconds, and this played on very sensitive equipment, no pops or clicks were noted and few copies will match, let alone better this for quality sound. Detail from the big band and the sheer power and realism on any quality system will impress even the most demanding listener and this record gives a commanding performance. This is analogue and vinyl near it’s very best. Zappa proves again he is the master musician, a man capable of producing such varied and wide ranging styles of music. Who wants predictable formulated music? – every album this man made was different and unpredictable – that is why is was impossible to get bored with him. This record still offers mastertape audio quality with all the sonic delivery and detail only the first issues really can. Carefully stored and handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Zappa classic. I strongly recommend to any non-fans to give this one a try – any music lover can hardly fail to like it. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. For those yet to discover the wonderful world of Frank Zappa – give this one a go – but be warned – his music is highly addictive and his catalogue is vast – an album to give your system and mind a good workout.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
