Label Conditions: Both are exceptional, and this is never an easy one. Very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This fragile album looks little played.

Cat Number: RSLP 9000.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. About average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce as an original: only available a relatively brief time on this label before being repressed on the tan format, then slightly later, with the new Kinney number. Not only that, the cover was changed totally to a much blander black cover. Never easy to find this record lightly played either, most originals I have seen have been badly marked and obviously not treated with the due care they merited. I will not offer such rubbish. Although this copy’s cover has a little wear, as most seem to attract, the record itself is exceptional and delivers superb looks and great clean sound, and that is always of paramount importance for me. Covers are important of course, but you cannot play a cover can you?

Brief Info: The third Fleetwood Mac album and first for Reprise after leaving Blue Horizon. It was also the last to feature Peter Green. This is my favourite Fleetwood Mac album from the early period, the sound was now more expanded and varied and includes the wonderful ‘When You Say’ – has the word ‘la’ ever been used on a song more beautifully than this? Original copies of this superb album are notoriously difficult to find in decent condition. The cover always wears badly due to the weight of the record inside and also being unprotected. Many, if not most are seen severely rubbed and impregnated with heavy, ugly ringwear, the edges so worn they are almost threadbare. This has only relatively minor wear when put into context. This is a long and somewhat fragile record with fine grooves that are largely unbanded to separate the songs. With some gentle music there are few places to hide blemishes, so glad to state this has barely any present on this little-played record. An enjoyable listen and at last a first issue that does this classic early blues set justice.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: few escape often major wear.

Cover Grade and Format: Very Good, properly graded as such and a more than respectable example. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Remember, only slightly later ones were totally changed with this lovely artwork replaced by a boring black replacement.

Cover Front: The front is lovely and has little to fault (for a change). Any fine and light rubbing is seen near the very edges and the main artwork is close to being perfect. No grubbiness or creasing of any note, the lovely horse and rider artwork, later lost to repackaging, looks really strong.

Cover Back: The back has some rubbing mostly near the edges mostly on the grey areas around the rim shape. Light ringwear only, far less than most I have seen and I guess one with none will exist somewhere, but I cannot hold my breath that long. Given it’s fragile and uncompromising nature, this is a decent back.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside has little to fault, ultra slight discolour if being critical but barely any actual wear. Note the forthcoming new member, Jeremy Spencer is present, but apparently he contributed little on this album.

Top Edges: Less than moderate rubbing which in places is patchy.

Bottom Edges: Consistent moderate rubbing on both.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Reasonably sharp with any wear modest with no feathering or trimming. The front is sealed and very neat and even sharper. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: The spine has chipped and rubbed with a fair degree of artwork affected with no text. Still quite solid, straight and folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Not the best spine ever, but the lovely front I feel more than compensates as does the lovely record.

Corners: All have rubbed in respect of their appropriate edge but do retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: Even with some wear, mostly to the edge areas, this is still one of the better ones of these I have seen. Clearly not for the most discerning or connoisseur collector, but many collectors will appreciate it.

The Inner Sleeve: The heavy-weight polylined, plain white inner is in very fine, little worn condition. Slightly darkened to give clues on age but all edges are secure with minimal creasing and includes two very neat windows with clear, solid lining. This is UK patented but has ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX++ and little short of Mint(-). A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace blemishes minimal, few and faint. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no noteworthy pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for what is a truly difficult album. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. No worn-out or chipped stylus have been near this one, of that I am certain. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This actual record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
