I know many hardcore fans of rhythm and blues group harmony (they'd never call it "doo-wop") who love the Flamingos mainly for their early sessions with original lead Sollie McElroy. In their opinion, the later stuff with Nate Nelson up front was too slickly produced and had too many studio-enhanced gimmicks--especially their 1958-62 recordings for End Records.

Though it makes me a lousy R&B purist, I respectfully disagree. While the early Flamingos produced many excellent singles, there's a reason why Nate Nelson was called the "Voice of Champagne." And if anything, the studio gimmicks enhanced these beautiful songs.

"Flamingo Serenade" is a collection of standards that I'm guessing was aimed at older buyers as well as the teen-aged rock 'n' roll audience. "I Only Have Eyes for You" kicks off Side A with a reverberated guitar riff that segues into Nelson's opening intonation (created especially for this version), "My love must be a kind of blind love / I can't see anyone but you," followed by the group's dreamy chants of "shoo-bop shoo bop," before Nelson launches into the first verse at the 35-second mark. Factor in the soaring falsetto of Johnny Carter (later of the Dells), and you're listening to one of the most perfect recordings ever made.

The quality is just as high on the other eleven tracks. Whether it's "I'm in the Mood for Love," "As Time Goes By," "Where or When," or "Begin the Beguine," the Flamingos present themselves as mature, polished professionals as equally adept at the Great American Songbook as they were at R&B ballads and uptempos. (Check out "Jump Children" for an example of just how hard these gentlemen could rock.)

Any man who plays "Flamingo Serenade" for his lady and doesn't get lucky that night just wasn't trying.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

What Beatles were for Rock’n’Roll in general, and British Invasion in particular, what Otis Redding was for Soul, what James Brown is for Funk and what Bob Dylan is for singers/songwriters of any kind, THE FLAMINGOS were for doo wop and vocal group sound of the late 1950’s. If you are only familiar with one of their songs - their classic mega-hit "I only have eyes for you" from 1958, you are missing A LOT - and doing this awesome group a great, grave injustice. If you think that the Byrds, Beach Boys or Everly Brothers could sing, well --- you were right, but --- wait until you hear THIS!!! Starting with the 1955’s much loved (and still reigning) doo-wop anthem "Golden Teardrops" and on through the years, THE FLAMINGOS created some of the most heavenly vocal harmonies known to the human ear (and brain). Any of their albums - whether on "CHECKER" or on George Goldner’s "END" label is highly collectable and much sought. This is their first - and still the most coveted - album for their golden "END" era, which came out in 1959 and includes some of the most impressive and dramatic vocal pirouettes the band ever attempted. Frankly, I don’t know which song from the album should be - or could be - singled out. They all simply sparkle. One gem after another, after another, in their absolutely pristine, original, majestic mono version. This is a must-have for any serious collector of the vocal group music of the 1950’s and 1960’s and a soothing balm of celestial harmonies, the kind of music which is no longer being made or heard.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-        Back cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker) (front cover has a similar sticker residue in bottom left corner)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
