A trio formed from diverse musicians from other groups such as KING CRIMSON and RARE BIRD, which managed one sole album. FIELDS is named after Graham Field, founding member of RARE BIRD and was responsible for many of the better tracks of the first two albums. After his departure RARE BIRD will change sound rather drastically veering towards a faster tempo rock with funky grooves. As for FIELDS, this is a keyboard-led trio with bassist Alan Barry singing but also playing guitars (although very discreet) but also adding some Mellotron lines. Rounding up that trio is Andy Mc McCullough who had played on KC's "Lizard" album and we will find him holding the drums stool for GREENSLADE later that year.

ALBUM  FULLY  PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING:
Yes – brilliant sound quality throughout!
This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. It plays with powerful and clear sound, with no groove wear or blurring of the sound separation.
Strong, undistorted sound free of loud pops or clicks.  I will give a detailed account below:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beginning with the iconic 'A Friend of Mine', the music bursts in with clear audio, no pops or clicks and nice silent run in and run out. No background noise at all!  Nice jazzy feel to this opening  track.
Moving into the wonderful 'While the Sun Still Shines', which demonstrates Fields incredible subtle production layering, with notes and effects that are usually lost on most even relatively played vinyls. Here the audio sings out with great clarity. For such a quiet track this is just a great audio performance. Again no background noise at all and silent run ins and run outs.

'Not So Good' Once more silent run ins and run outs. The sound really is clear. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. Still no loud pops or clicks during the music, and not a hint of distortion. Any crackle is minimal.
'Three Minstrels' Again plays with clear sound and once more silent run ins and run outs.   Superb clear bright sound. No pops etc etc
'Slow Susan'  The last track on side one. Again plays with clear sound and once more silent run ins.    Superb clear bright sound. No pops etc etc. After the music has finished on the run out some minor crackle.
So there ends side one. Fully play tested I do not believe you will ever be able to equal the audio     playback let alone better it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Side 2. Starts in with the incredible 'Over and Over Again', following nice silent run in, the sound is great.   On the run out to this track there are two very very soft tics but these are NOT OVER THE MUSIC and  are  not at all intrusive.
The delicate 'Feelin Free' sounds great. Silent run ins and run outs once again. Amazing for such a paired down track.
The stand out track on this LP  'Fair Headed Lady', the audio is just superb, with a little audible static and clear vocal layering.  Again silent ins and outs. Remarkable.
'A Place to Lay My Head"  alternates between the delicate and raucous, this track can be a real test on this album, and here it sings out, with great clarity. Super guitar playing. No sound between this and the following track whatsoever.
'The Eagle', rounds off the album, again to the same audio standard. Nice clear sound.  No loud pops or clicks, just   bright clear audio.  Lovely organ in the background feeling this closing track.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All the way through every track plays with sharp definition. A lack of loud pops, clicks, and certainly no distortion anywhere on this great record makes this a solid collectable press of this ultimate rarity. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars multi layers come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality and minimal surface sound makes this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten. Any light background crackle is minimal.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This great record plays with no loud pops or clicks, and absolutely No repeating noises, distortion or sticks.
A solid all round example of this great  vinyl. Must be graded as EX+
A staggering first stereo mix.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE LABELS
Both labels are in great condition and are the first release matt orange CBS labels. Superb, with no marks or writing, and no discernible spindle wear. Only a few ultra light spindle traces can be found, and they are very light!

A solid all round set. Graded EXCELLENT+.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING
A great piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl DOES NOT have marks and sounds brilliant.
Unbelievable to think this vinyl is 48 old!  A really wonderful example. Graded conservatively as EX+.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE COVER
  Design, Illustration – Colin Payton.

FULLY MATT UNLAMINATED GATEFOLD. EXCELLENT+ condition with only very minor storage wear to the corners. The sleeve lays perfectly flat.  NO creases to the front, inner or reverse. The thick spine is perfectly straight and clearly legible
The spines are nearly always flattened, worn and unreadable. Not this one!
There is minimal scuffing to the corners, and no rubbing along the edges. The opening edges are very square and unfrayed.   The back cover is nice and clean, with NO ring wear. Please see the photos.
A great solid example. All round, this is a really nice original cover. Grades at EX+
Please use the zoom facility for greater detail.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   THE INNER
An original CBS advertising inner. NO small tears. A bit of folding/minor creasing. Absolutely nothing serious.
