Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: purchased from new by one owner and played he said just once. So both ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of very small and light, faint spindle marks.

Cat Number: VC 501.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. Even though a budget issue, there was no skimping on vinyl, this is a well-above average weight for a record of this time.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate: purchased by the curious at the bargain initial price of 49p and the most seen Faust album of all. Conditions however are factor: the cover does not wear well and the record with it’s complex material and sound is intolerant of unworthy equipment. So clean barely played copies are at more of a premium.

Brief Info: For me only Can were more important than Faust in the Krautrock genre of the early 70s, but only marginally so. The most experimental of the ‘popular’ German progressive bands of this time and far too wierd for most. The Faust Tapes when issued on the new Virgin label in 1973 had the ‘hefty’ price tag of 49p, thus it is found more often than the earlier Polydor albums or even Faust IV that were all full price. People bought this one for curiosity at the give-away price to check out this band - most found it too dense and obscure, even too weird and experimental for their tastes. Well I consider this a classic and this album will appeal to those who like their music challenging and not mainstream. The front cover has references to Zappa and his Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and even more cutting edge Beatles songs from their later period. Faust were never afraid to make new sounds and experiment with effects and electronics and guitar sounds - any fan of Zappa should love Faust and this one in particular. I quote from the small print at the top of the front album sleeve to explain a little more of what’s inside this amazing release.

“The music on this album, drawn from Faust’s own library of private tapes, was recorded informally and not originally intended for release. However, since British interest in the group has been unusually great, it has been decided to make some of this unofficial material available to the public in this country. These tapes have been left exactly as they were recorded - frequently live - and no post-production work has been imposed on them. The group wish to make it clear that this is not to be regarded as their third album, but a bonus releases - on sale at the current price of a single - to mark their signing with Virgin Records, for whom they will shortly be recording their next official album. The Faust Tapes: reveals Faust at their most personal and spontaneous. It’s a unique glimpse behind the scenes of a group which European and British critics have hailed as one of th emost exciting and exploratory in the world.’’

This copy on offer would be one of the very best I have ever seen, this is nearly always very grubby or scratched to pieces. Well this original copy has a super cover with little wear or grubbiness and the record was one of those that was played once and ignored afterwards. A one owner from new copy who decided to let someone else enjoy it – it would have been me if I did not already have one. Most collectors should love this copy, the record’s condition especially is hugely pleasing.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. The spine ends are deeply pinched and retain superb shape (please see my close-up pictures). Printed and made in England with Island and EMI credits.

Cover Front: A very small crease on the bottom right corner and very slight traces of darkening with age, but little else to fault on the hugely informative text front. Even those superbly defined flats on the spine ends remain looking practically as made.

Cover Back: The mind-bending design on the back looks very nice too, any grubbiness or marks very mild and faint and certainly better than the majority I have seen before.

Top Edge: Little real wear, again minor darkening.

Bottom Edge: Similar again, slight traces of friction rubs through storage.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal traces of wear, any burr traces tiny and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed with just one small and very minor crinkle trace. All text is perfect and unworn and those deeply pinched ends look very impressive with superb definition retained (please see my close-up pictures).

Corners: Just the small crease on the bottom right, little wear that apart and all retain very fine to excellent (or better) shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quite fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This early original item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain unlined inner that has little wear. Slightly thinned on the bottom edge with a tiny central split and one corner semi-crease. Aged little with barely any marks at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy now played just twice – I do not guess on number of plays, but only state what I am told by any original owner who purchased from new. Any surface marks few, light and very faint, just one shows a fraction more but no sound of course. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This underground prog classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few originals will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – if you like early-era Zappa – you will love this. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
