Description
Up for auction is a rare promo copy of the soundtrack lp to the late 60’s surf movie The Fantastic Plastic Machine. The music was composed by Harry Betts, and the lp is a US stereo pressing on the Epic label (BN26469). The movie is important in that it captures the start of the shortboard revolution in the late 60’s, and features the surfing of Bob Mctavish, Nat Young, and George Greenough. The music is a subtle blend of jazz, soul, funk and rock I would say. As mentioned, this is a very hard to find record!
The vinyl is bright and glossy, with a few light marks. There’s some light background noise you can hear in quieter parts, but no other issues at all. I would rate the vinyl as VG.
Both of the labels are Ex, they are bright, clean, and free of stickers and writing.
Unfortunately, the entire top seam of the cover is split, and ½ of the bottom seam has too. The splits are clean and are only noticeable upon close inspection. The spine is intact, with just slight wear to each corner. There is a little bit of shelfwear and ringwear to the front and back. No nasty stickers or writing, but there is red “Demonstration Not For Sale” stamped on the back. If it wasn’t for the seam splits I would have graded it VG, but with the splits it has to be downgraded to Good. As mentioned, the splits aren’t obvious, so it would still make a great display copy!
All in all, a nice playing or display copy of this very hard to find surfing album. I will happily swap the item for other surf movie soundtracks, just let me know what you have.
