Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: K 54003.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 124 grams. Around average for it’s era.

Rarity: Quite scarce and finding the record and original insert in true near mint conditions is never easy. This another from the collection of barely played records I am currently offering.

Brief Info: The fifth Family album and now incorporating the skills of John Wetton who later joined King Crimson. His multi-instrument talents gave Family an almost different sound but of course with Chapman still providing his distinctive vocals, it was still very much Family. The album was well received and sold reasonably well but finding very fine all-round original copies has always proved hard. The multi-layered cover is very fragile indeed with single thickness card and it does not wear well. The red insert is often missing and rarely seen perfect. Any record forty years old in little short of Mint condition is rare and this is just that. So one for the discerning Family and rock collector, this will prove hard to find much better.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: prone to every form of wear known.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this being somewhat critical of an impossibly fragile and complex cover. Only the back that stores the record is double thickness. It has four pages of single thickness, shaped card with varying degrees of clarity for the five band members. The back of these sheets is a deep purple colour and will leave set-off on the white opposite sides freely. All faces are matt-finished and the whole concept is flimsy and fragile. All is held together with two thick original staples that are punched into the thick spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front/Visible Areas etc: Very nice indeed with only mild traces of any grubbiness on the white areas. All the cut-out edges are undamaged and largely sharp with any mild burring at the very tops, this being minimal for such a cover. Minor traces on the front bottom edge also. Few marks or creases and this highly unusual and innovative front will take a fair degree of matching or beating.

Cover Back: The back is massively prone to ringwear for obvious reasons. Dark single colour, matt finished with a record resting against it, few will survive with none. This has only relatively mild traces with few marks or creases. I like the little creature near the bottom right that I have shown in close up – ‘Daft I call it’.

Cover Inner Gatefold ‘Pages’: Inside cover (page 1 for a starting point reference): Little to fault on the deep purple card, the intricate cut edge shapes are near perfect with any burr traces tiny. Page 2: Near perfect again, minor burring to the top edge. Page 3: Deep purple again and near pristine with all edges crisp and sharp. Page 4: White and with barely any set-off from the purple opposite, again all edges sharp and neat. Page 5: refer to page 3. Page 6: refer to page 4 with just minor burr traces near the bottom right corner and top right. Page 7: refer to page 3 again. Page 8: white again, this is inside back cover, mild set-off traces and very fine and faint, ring arc near 5 o’clock position. Any edge burring tiny, few and faint.

Top Edges: Some slight burring and light thickening near the centre. Given the design and card thickness, this will prove very difficult to avoid, and here, it’s only very light indeed with minimal visual detraction. There are NO tears.

Bottom Edges: Being the resting edge, I would have assumed this would have more wear than above, but NO, it has even less with barely anything to really fault. Any burring, which is very light, is seen on the front edge.

Right Edges, and Type: With four single thickness card edges to form the ‘pages’, these are in remarkably fine condition with barely any burring or thickening at all. These set back a little from the main back entrance edge so are not exposed as much. The back edges are reasonably sharp with a little mild thickening in places with minimal burr traces.

Spine and Text: A single thickness spine that has to support the pages weight. So obviously flimsy and delicate. It is very wide and is uncrushed as such but has a natural tilt to right which is only mild. Both the original staples are rock solid and totally unloosened with no tarnishing at all. Solid, straight and folded square, all the right edges meet up as when made and still perfectly parallel. All text is perfect and unworn as can be seen on my close-up pictures and note too the original staples.

Corners: The top right is round in manufacture and remains very neat with little to fault. The others are right angles and show little wear - the spine top has a smallish rub. All retain very fine shape and little creasing.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile, complex and near unique early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This inventive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(-), and practically as made and guaranteed original. Printed red on one side and white on the back. This is clean, fresh and any marks or handling traces practically zero. No creasing and any ruffle type marks minute. Try finding this elusive insert better.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: with one corner crease and one semi-crease. Lightly aged with very mild discolour only and all edges secure with no repairs. This has two open windows and was never lined, both circles are immculate.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) and great temptation to grade full Mint on a record that could practically pass as new. A fantastic visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks or hairlines so few and fine, they are even register even under bright light. Visually a super record that should please practically all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
