Label/Format: Island - original first press pink block format. Please ignore the price guides that still suggest the UK first pressing is on the pink orange eyeball label – this is NOT so and a glaring error. If anyone owns such a copy I sure would like to see it and it is largely believed my most, it simply does not exist.

Label Conditions: Both look very impressive: very clean and fresh and highly attractive. Spindle marks are only light, fine and faint as mostly seen under angled light. This gorgeous first issue looks little played reitterated by immaculate sound throughout.

Cat Number: ILPS 9102.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. a more typical weight for this era.

Rarity: Quite rare: the Island label was in constant change from 1967 to 1970 with four distinctly different formats. There are were also variants on the main design too e.g. texturing and styles depending on what company pressed them. Of the four formats, the pink block is the least seen with the least albums issued on it. Of those few that were, fewer still were new titles and this second Island Fairport album was one of them. A format that was only available for around six to eight months before the more common pink i design replaced it. Although the price guides, over the years, have put some major errors right, for some reason, they have failed to correct this one. It seems almost universally agreed, this album did not make issue on the orange eyeball pink format in the UK and the very first pressings are on the pink black block, as per this. Only available for a short time before being repressed and first issues of this classic folk-rock album on this label are rare especially with the record in such supreme condition. Also worthy of note, this copy was pressed by Polydor and my play-grade was simply sensational. The detail, dynamics and pure presentation of the music and vocals are simply breathtaking – these are the types of records I invested a lot off money into for a high-end turntable that gleans every fragment of information available from a top mastertape quality disc. Quite honest, the band sounded in the room and gave that rare tingle factor many times. For fans of the early legendary band, this one is unmissable.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second of three masterpieces that featured Fairport Convention with the wonderful, and sadly missed Sandy Denny. Unhalfbricking – a strange title was actually thought of by Sandy during a word game in the group van while travelling – her parents are the couple on the front cover. This a genuine folk-rock classic, the quality of the songs is astonishing from the very beginning, ‘Genesis Hall’, a catchy short song with a lovely haunting quality, then ‘Si su dois partir’, a surprise hit single which features Dave Swarbrick on fiddle, he actually features on half the album and his influence is highly important for this album’s quality and sound. Two more legendary Fairport titles are also included: the traditional ‘A Sailor’s Life’ which is embolded as one of the greatest folk-rock songs of all time, beautiful vocals by Sandy complemented perfectly with Thompson’s distinctive guitar and then ending with a blistering fiddle frenzy by Swarbrick. And of course Sandy’s tour de force the majestic ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’, not just a classic within this genre, but for me, one of the greatest songs ever written – once heard, never forgotten. This wonderful song, like the lady herself is written in folk history as one of the true greats. Also featured are three Bob Dylan songs, lesser known gems, and again are beautifully performed. A rare delight to find a genuine first pressing too (check out those matrixes and stampers above). An album that does not wear well – the music complex and fragile, the cover hugely prone to all forms of wear. This is a very fine all-round example, any cover wear, gentle and light, and still an attractive one. The record appears only very light played and offering sound that will rarely be matched, let alone beaten. One that takes you directly into the studio itself, I have seldom heard better or as good. Island records pressing quality does vary considerable – some were stunningly perfect, some could be very noisy and disappoint. This Polydor-pressed beauty more the former and little short of reference standard. I politely remind I play all my records on hugely revealing equipment and little escapes it and such records is what audiophile sound is all about.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+. Few avoid often heavy ringwear, sticker tears, severe creasing, fading and significant rubbing. The early examples with heavier records inside all these years usually take their toll to make this delicate cover wear even more vulnerable.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better for such a fragile piece. A single unlaminated format with a matt finish and smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Ernest J Day.

Cover Front: A lovely simplistic front that has great charm and finding a much better example will not prove easy with a first, thick pressed record inside. Minimal wear at all with just a couple of very light and faint surface creases that show little. Clean and attractive with no sticker issues, and this retains a fine degree of freshness and strong unfaded colour.

Cover Back: Up there with the best I have seen, the lack of ring wear is a major plus and so few ever avoid it. Any rubbing is very light, little and faint – traces on the bottom edge and hints only elsewhere and again retaining deep unfaded colour. The odd tiny surface crease with any surface marks bordering on minuscule. Both front and back on this very first ‘Day’ cover are exceptional when put into context and actually wondering if my overall grading is harsh.

Top Edge: Straight with hardly any traces of wear at all. Edges on this cover are thin and again vulnerable and seldom seen anything like lightly worn at best.

Bottom Edge: Mainly light patchy rubbing, almost the least to be expected on this fragile traditional storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burr traces are minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. In fact, these two edges are not cut quite flush in manufacture.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with a little compression so the text is seen via the front. But glad to state almost all of the text is present anyway as many are seen threadbare and eroded. There is a small rub to the ‘F’ in ‘UNHALFBRICKING’, any other other text rubbing are small clips with most remains strong, clear and easily read as seen in my close-up pictures – also allow for my flash to washout small detail. The white surface remains clean and unusually avoided grubbiness and any major rubbing. Another huge plus on this cover.

Corners: Small tip rubs are rarely avoided at best, and these retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: Rarely seen with such little wear, with most of any present on the bottom edge and corners, this is a very attractive all-round example of this famous cover. One that will prove very difficult to find significantly better and my grading for the two main faces is somewhat harsh. This original EJD printed cover should please many, if not most collectors given the known fact of how difficult it is.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this came to me with a plain solid unlined white inner. This has aged a little with some darkening of the edges. Minimal creasing and all edges now secure – two tiny edge movement splits I neatly repaired to stop the risk of them widening in the future.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): both the playing surfaces are very clean, shiny, intense black and pressed on very solid vinyl. A couple of light surface marks on side one, one hairline on two. Anything else are ultra fine and faint surface trace seen under bright angled light – and the most important factor is the immense, detailed and clean sound quality that totally blew me away. A 44-year-old original, of that, no doubts as this label was only so briefly available, in super all-round condition and few will have many fewer visual blemishes than this and I can hardly imagine this being beaten for sound.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality: It is always with great anticipation I play any early Fairport’s album and knowing pressing quality is never guaranteed, it can be a little nervous experience too. An album I truly adore – all Fairport albums up to 1970 are truly essential and this title is simply magnificent. A record that plays even above it’s high visual grading, this is a wonderful example that does this classic album almost perfect justice. A copy devoid of the so-often-heard crackle and clipping to the wonderful Denny voice and fiddle solos. Again I remind, I play my records on a Linn LP12, still one of the most revealing front-ends ever made. No distortion or sound degrading at all and a clean pressing by Polydor. Sandy’s vocals are crystal clear, detailed and have an in the room quality. Thompson’s guitar chords are defined and sharp, even Swarbrick’s fiddle, always one of the most vulnerable to damage on vintage vinyl, is precise and sharp. This without any doubt has never been subjected to piledriver vintage needles and has probably not seen light-of-day for decades. An ultimate first issue for the highly discerning collector – do not lose it.

End Piece: ‘Classic’ and ‘Essential’ are two words often overused (often by myself when I get carried away with a real personal favourite), but I make no apology for using them for this album. The thing that amazes, is the next album, Leige and Leif was arguably even better. The standards set by the early Fairport albums was such that they probably will never will be equalled within this field - Thompson and Denny were like peaches and cream - they complemented each other perfectly. This actual record on offer is impressive – the tiny few surface marks superficial and non-sounding – and sound quality is wonderful. It barely reminds of it’s age and was a delight. The detail and precision of this first pressing is second to none. Listening to this classic album rarely fails to move – a mini work of genius – and with a lovely original cover as well. I hope the winning bidder enjoys this beautiful record as much as I did – these current long hot summer days may not be the best time for indoor vinyl listening, but in the long colder nights of the winter, you will wish you had won this beauty, a rare opportunity not to be missed.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
