2nd PRESS
BLACK PARLOPHONE
Here is the more difficult and harder to find BEATLES 1st number 1 Please Please Me/Ask Me Why.
The title song on the A side of this single was first aired in September of 1962. It was not untill the 26th of November of the same year, that the Beatles came together in Abbey Road to record the songs for their second EMI single...Please Please Me was put down in 18 takes and the Ask Me Why on side two, was put down in just 6 takes. As a little note: Andy White recording of Please Please Me is on the LP rather than the single.
Release date was the 11th of January 1963.
Respective positions in the various charts in '63:
BBC: 1
Disc weekly: 1
Melody Maker: 1
New Musical Express: 1
New Record Mirror: 1
Record Retailer: 2
The details of this single up for auction:
Catalogue number: 45-R 4983
(as a note: the prefix of "45" from the catalogue number was removed after March 1963 as well as EMI dropping the red label for the more familiar black label..Some of these black labels still have the "45" as they were pressed at the same time as the red labeled versions).
Matrix numbers Side 1: 7XCE 17217-1N
Matrix numbers side 2: 7XCE 17218-1N
Mothers/Stampers Side 1: 2 GH
Mothers/Stampers Side 2: 2 GA
Tax code in the run-off: MPT
NO Tax code on the Label
(As a note: The 'PT' tax code was used up until the 26th of November 1962 and then changed to 'MT' from the 1st of January 1963...This 'MPT' tax code represents the transition between the two dates and two tax brackets)
Labels: "Dick James Music Co.LTD" at 9 O'clock on both sides. This time their second EMI release has the "McCartney-Lennon" credits on both sides.
The label has "The Parlophone Co.Ltd..." in both upper and lower caps. There are quite a few light spindle marks, but very little hole wear at all-please see the pictures...The Please Please Me side is in FAB condition!!
AN ORIGINAL "FACTORY SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE" STICKER TO SIDE 2
These samples were sent out to radio station to play-not many of them survived.
Vinyl: WOW...The bass, followed by the harmonica, kicks in with high energy and deep bass at the start-SUPERB!
I have just listened to both sides of the single. NO skips or jumps-there some background noise-I noticed this more on side 2. I believe this surface noise will certainly be reduced after a professional clean, but there are many whispy marks to the vinyl.
NO WARPING AT ALL...FLAT, FLAT , FLAT.
I did notice a small dimple in the vinyl-obviously created in the pressing plant-but this doesn't create any problem to the audio playback on side 1, but side 2, there are around 4 revolutionary but short 'whhooop' s.
The Sleeve: It is one of THE BEST sleeves of this time I have ever seen!Just light creases. The back is lovely and bright and carries the "6'- to 50' EMI Record Token" offer.
GORGEOUS!
