Items of Note
Altogether there were eight Elvis albums released on the All Silver Top STEREO label. Four of these were 1st pressings (Golden Records Vol. 3, Fun in Acapulco, Kissin’ Cousins, and Roustabout), and four were re-issues that were initially released on the Living Stereo label, and then for some reason re-released on this label (G.I. Blues, His Hand in Mine, Blue Hawaii, and Something for Everybody*).

The record in this auction – Roustabout – would turn out to be the last Elvis record released on this All Silver Top STEREO label. RCA was transitioning to the White Top label at the time, and first pressing issues of this record can be found on both label varieties.

As Elvis’ 16th movie, Roustabout marks the exact middle of Elvis’ dramatic movie career. The record ended the year ranked as the 8th top selling album of the year for 1964. In my opinion, the success of this soundtrack, along with the movie release of Kissin’ Cousins earlier that year, marked the turning point in Elvis’ acting career and doomed him to miss out on the opportunity to act in movies of greater substance (as he hoped he would be able to do).

Although it of course has some fun songs, this soundtrack had no hits and showed a noticeable decline in the quality of songs from earlier movies. Elvis had no control over the songs that were offered for inclusion in his movies, and the fact that an Elvis soundtrack could rank as #8 for the year without needing hit material must have had an impact with movie producers and the amount of effort they felt they needed exert into finding good songs for his movies. This idea is further supported by the fact that the movie Tickle Me (2 movies after Roustabout) did not contain any songs written specifically for the movie, and instead, included non-movie songs that Elvis had recorded earlier in the 1960’s. Perhaps this is why its EPA soundtrack is better than others of its time period 😁.

* I have seen it written that Pot Luck may also have been reissued on this label, but I personally have never found any confirmation of this.

I first became an Elvis fan in the fall of 1976 and received my first Elvis record for Christmas that year (from my uncle – it was a tan label “Live at Madison Square Garden” because my uncle liked the song “Never Been to Spain”).
