Up for bid is a rare copy of Old Shep by Elvis Presley recorded on a 45 rpm single CR-15 (H7-OW-3721) on the RCA Victor label. Recorded in 1955 or 1956, it reached #47 on the Billboard Top 100 list but seemingly never received much acclaim and probably never was widely distributed as a single. This copy is a disc jockey promo. It comes with a plain white label with RCA Victor at the top and the RCA Victor dog to the left above the black line. Although given no billing on this recording, the backup singers appear to be the jordanaires, with whom Elvis recorded many of his records. The record produces a very nice sound although there is some popping present which was typical of the early monaural recordings. The vinyl is in very nice condition with a nice sheen and only some very minor surface scratching. The label is also in very good condition with only a slight bit of sleevewear evident and a #w 1082 penned on it. This record would grade at VG++. A unique feature of this record is that it has no recording on the flip side which is also without a label. Old Shep was recorded on an EP record and was also recorded on one of Elvis's albums, "Elvis" LPM-1382 , in 1956. Aside from a disc jockey copy such as this, there probably were few 45s of this record ever released. I have been a fan of Elvis and have collected his records from his earliest days but never saw a copy of this song in a 45 single. This is a record you will surely want to add to your collection!
