Edison Diamond Discs were a unique type of phonograph record produced by Thomas Edison's company from 1912 to 1929. Here are some key facts about these records:  Physical Characteristics - About 1/4 inch thick and 10 inches in diameter - Weighed close to one pound each - Made of a compressed wood flour or clay core with a layer of phenolic resin (similar to Bakelite) on the surface- Played at 80 rpm, faster than the standard 78 rpm of other records at the time Technical Details - Used vertical "hill and dale" recording method instead of lateral grooves - Required a special Edison phonograph with a permanent diamond stylus to play - Could not be played on standard phonographs without damaging the disc - Had longer playing time (up to 4.5 minutes per side) compared to other 10-inch records Sound Quality - Known for excellent sound fidelity, especially in early years (1912-1916) - Recorded in a "dead" studio without reverberation, giving a very realistic sound - Edison renamed them "Re-Creations" due to their high fidelity

How We Grade 78's

Grade

Record

N

As new and unplayed (there are virtually no 78s that can categorically be claimed to be un-played).

E+

Plays like new, with very, very few signs of handling, such as tiny scuffs from being slipped in and out of jackets.

E

Still very shiny, near new looking, with no visible signs of wear, but a few inaudible scuffs and scratches.

E-

Still shiny but without the luster of a new record, few light scratches.

V+

V+ is an average condition 78 in which scuffs and general use has dulled the finish somewhat. Wear is moderate but playing is generally free from distortion. Surface noise not overly pronounced.

V

Moderate, even wear throughout, but still very playable. Surface noise and scratches audible but not intrusive.

V-

Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy graying in loud passages. Music remains loud in most passages. Surface noise and scratches well below music level.

G+

Gray throughout but still serviceable. Music begins to sound muffled. Heavy scratches.

G

Quite seriously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise.

G-

Music still prominent, but wear and scratch damage extensive.

F

Most of music remains audible over surface noise, but listening now uncomfortable.

P

Unplayable.
