An exceedingly rare and highly sought after copy of this 1964 UK 1st pressing jazz classic on the ISLAND record label, ILP 909

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  ILP 909 A//1 with stampers "1" and "1" at 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock respectively

Side 2  ILP 909 B//1 with stampers "1" and "1" at 11.30 o'clock and 11.45 o'clock respectively

The appearance of the vinyl is excellent plus (EX+). This is heavy duty, completely flat vinyl and still retaining it's original glossy and jet black lacquered sheen. In normal daylight the appearance of the vinyl comes across as near perfect and it is only under a bright light that just the occasional, small wispy hairlines and very light surface scuff comes into view - all superficial and certainly nothing here to impinge upon the wonderful audio, the quality of which supports the hypothesis that this record has not had many plays at all. Remarkable condition vinyl considering it's 55 year antiquity!

The labels are excellent plus (EX+). All of the black text, white matt background, and red "ISLAND RECORDS..." and iconic Island logo remain beautifully intact. I cannot even detect the usual few spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole, again supporting the view that this record has not had many plays. Beautiful labels!

The front laminated outer sleeve is excellent (EX).  All edges, including the spine, remain firm with no scuffing and just a few barely detectable light "nicks" - nothing really. The only creasing on the front side are x4 horizontal 1cm (or less) surface creases adjacent and perpendicular to the spine each of which do, just, impinge upon the spine though the spine itself remains firm. The colouring on the front side remains perfectly intact - nicely rich, vibrant and clear. The corners are nicely defined right angles with just a little rubbing at the bottom two corners - very minor indeed. The reverse side is near perfect with each flip back remaining perfectly intact, no creasing, no age discolouration, no unwanted writing or doodles, no score marks, and all text remaining perfectly legible. The opening edges also remain firm with no fraying at all. Very, very nice indeed!

Finally, the quality of the audio is excellent plus (EX+). There is wonderful tone and clarity throughout and with no distortion, even on the higher frequencies and at higher volume. No skips or clicks (actually I noticed two mild background clicks towards the beginning of track 2, side 2, but even close scrutiny under a bright light did not reveal any obvious cause - presumably a speck of dust in the grooves through decades of storage), and no background interference either. Each track makes for a great listen - with Ernest Ranglin  approaching his prime on guitar, and in partnership with Malcolm Cecil (bass) and Alan Ganley on drums, you have here a group of musicians at the top of their game. Free jazz, contemporary jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz, avant-garde jazz...call it what you will, this is simply great stuff!

Comes with original plain white die cut inner sleeve with no splits, tears, fraying, just the hint of a little age discolouration and corner creasing and still 100% fully functional. Note that I always post the record in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.

In summary a gorgeous copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1960's UK 1st pressing jazz classic, with terrific audio quality - a  worthy addition to any serious jazz vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl thick cardboard crucifix style mailer along with at least two further cardboard stiffeners. I always separate the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
