How this session got set up we may never know. The mainstream, Latin-oriented, mellow bebop of the Latin Jazz Quintet meets the iconoclastic Eric Dolphy, one of the first wave of 1960s avant-jazz players–and things work out very nicely for all parties concerned.

Dolphy’s saxophone, usually one of the most vocalized horn sounds of the ’60s, is slightly restrained here. But his flute playing is always extremely lyrical even at its most abstract, and he fits in well with the Quintet’s soul-jazz groove on “Sunday Go Meetin’.” “Blues in 6/8″ is another soul-jazz mid-tempo cooker, and Dolphy, indulging in some straight-ahead blues playing, sounds as if he’s having a swell time. Gene Casey plays a direct, lyrical, sparkling piano in the vein of Horace Silver, and the percussionists keep everything percolating steadily throughout.

This album is not mind-blowing. The chops, even Dolphy’s, are not blistering. It just happens to be a laid back affair with a great deal of space and nuance. And, good god, it’s gorgeous. For a player, I’d say there’s a lot to learn from this date. For the layman, I can think of few albums as simply pleasant. This one’s perfectly suited to a summer’s day, spent with friends and cocktails.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (MINOR hairline scuff noted on side 1, not expected to be audible) [NOTE: A VERY SMALL  "BUBBLE" - ABOUT 2 MILLIMETERS IN DIAMETER -  ABOUT TWO THIRDS INTO THE TITLE TRACK - VISIBLE ON ONE SIDE ONLY - CAUSES ABOUT 6-7 CLICKS AND POPS, BUT IS OTHERWISE ENTIRELY INCONSEQUENTIAL)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about ½ x 1 inches in size; two tracks circled with a ballpoint pen)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-         Small, barely visible, water stain noted on the back panel (less than 1 square inch in size)

-         Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
