Description

ONE OF THE SCARCER CLASSICAL EDISON DIAMOND DISCS WITH TENOR AND CONDUCTOR AND GENERAL MANAGER OF THE  WELSH IMPERIAL SINGERS.  RECORD IS IN SUPERB PLAYING CONDITION WITH LITTLE IF ANY WEAR AND IT PLAYS LOUD AND CLEAR WITH MINIMAL SURFACE NOISE.   I ACQUIRED IT YEARS AGO AS NEW OLD STOCK AND I BELIEVE I HAVE PLAYED IT ONLY TWO OR THREE TIMES, THE ORIGINAL DEALERS SLEEVE IS WITH IT.  TWO SONGS ARE "MENTRA GWEN" (fairest Gwen) AND "O! NA BYDDAI'N HAF O HYD" (O That Summer Smiled For Aye)

THE ABOVE TWO SHEETS ARE ALSO INCLUDED WITH THE RECORD

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE CIRCA 1918.

R Festyn Davies was in fact Welsh born. He was a native of Trawsfynydd in Snowdonia. Snowdonia, he proudly told us, in American Welsh, was the home of the ancestors of the US Founding Father and third President, Thomas Jefferson.   Festyn Davies himself, so said the publicity material he gave us, was trained at the London Guildhall School of Music and also studied under the Italian tenor, Enrico Duzensi.

In 1908 he'd left England for America where his career began as soloist with the Filipino Constabulary Band.

But with a "dynamic personality" (his own words) he was
destined to conduct some of the biggest musical festivals in the country, such as the Great Festival at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  Stadium, where a chorus of 10,000 voices was accompanied by six full bands before a 50,000 audience.

This same Festyn Davies was now back in Wales to recruit a professional male ensemble which would go on a world tour under his own direction.
