Description
This is an astounding recording, and a scarce one: the great Nathan Milstein (with Leon Pommer, piano) plays a varied recital of ten virtuosic violin encores, by Wieniawski, Bach, Schumann, Sarasate, Ravel, Novacek, Tchaikovsky and Ravel. The performances are incomparable in their charm, discipline and warm intensity. The close-up, mono-only sound is superb--like having Milstein play a recital in your living room.
The disc is original mid-'50s USA Capitol P8396, on the green/gold label.
The record was carefully auditioned with a Goldring 1042 cartridge and a Grado mono, Music Hall TT's, Densen amplification and Epos speakers. The thick disc looks splendid and glossy, and plays like a NM, esp. with the mono cartridge, which I recommend.
The bright, crisp jacket is in great shape, but with a top split, thus a VG or so. I've added a new Nitty Gritty inner sleeve, and then slipped everything into a new resealable Japanese mylar outer sleeve.
