Brooklyn-born pianist Duke Jordan was on the front lines of the bebop revolution as a member of Charlie Parker’s quintet in the late-1940s which also featured a young Miles Davis on trumpet. In 1960, Jordan recorded his sole Blue Note album as a leader, "Flight To Jordan", an exemplar hard bop date featuring a top-shelf quintet with Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Reggie Workman on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The set presented six fine Jordan original compositions including the minor mode title track, the elegant ballad “Starbrite,” the church-inspired “Deacon Joe,” and the Latin-tinged “Si-Joya.”
Duke Jordan's only Blue Note album was one of the most eagerly awaited Tone Poet releases.
- The Allmusic Review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 5 stars and stated "the music has plenty of strong melodies and variety. This is one of Duke Jordan's better recordings and is quite enjoyable".
Blue Note Tone Poet Series The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley, a.k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180g audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc.
