The latest release in Trojan's popular new 7" singles brings a fantastic unreleased Desmond Dekker cut.

As with all previous titles in this series, this single is exclusively available via the Trojan Store, and each disc is hand numbered, pressed on heavyweight vinyl, and presented in a Trojan sleeve, with pressings limited to just 365.

The latter half of 1966 witnessed a significant change in the sound of Jamaican music. The rapid tempo of Ska was gradually being superseded by an exciting new style that in time would become labelled Rock Steady. And it was at such a time that Desmond Dekker, along with Barrington Howard (aka Al Barry), Carl Winston James Samuel and Clive Campbell (collectively known as the Aces) attended a session for producer, Leslie Kong, to cut what they hoped would be their biggest hit of the year.

Having patiently waited for the Roland Alphonso and Freddie McKay to finish recording their material, the quartet were finally ushered in to perform their new song, but with the allotted time for the session almost having run its course, they only had time for one take of the number. Under these high- pressured conditions, Desmond and the boys cut ‘Dancing Time’, a track that, despite the stressful circumstances, hit ‘hit’ all over it. Yet due to a twist of fate, the recording remained unissued.

Soon after the session, the group found themselves riding high in the Jamaican charts with ‘007 Shanty Town’ and rather than issue ‘Dancing Time’, Kong had Desmond pen the similarly themed ‘Rudie Got Soul’ as the follow-up. By the time, the Rude Boy craze had finally run its course, the Rock Steady sound had slowed noticeably from that being created in the autumn of ’66, and so it was that ‘Dancing Time’ remained unreleased and, all but forgotten… until now.

Thankfully, this sublime piece of early Rock Steady finally sees issue on Trojan’s popular new 7” range. The track is coupled with another Beverley’s gem from the era, namely ‘Beverley’s Special’, performed by legendary tenor saxophonist, Roland Alphonso. Recorded within weeks of the topside, this magnificent instrumental originally saw issue in the UK on the Pyramid label as ‘Nothing For Nothing’, although the sound quality of that pressing pales by comparison to that of this, its first official vinyl reissue.
