Description
Brilliant and talented singer-songwriter, David Gates released his first solo album in 1973, simply titled 'First'. Though several more would follow over the years, none woud ever match the quality of the songs and the production found on this one. As most of you know, David Gates was one of the founding members of the group Bread which (briefly) disbanded just prior to the release of this album. Most long-time fans of Bread were stunned at how cohesive and focussed Gates' first solo album was. In my opinion it's as strong if not stronger, than anything Bread ever released.
The copy I'm offering is the 1st 'Quadraphonic' pressing (EQ-5066) of 'First'. It is interesting in that some of the songs have a slightly different mix when heard in 'Stereo'. In general the audio is brighter, more detail is heard in the guitars, drums, and vocals. Basically, it is a better mix in my opinion. This is the very first pressing on the black Elektra labels with the gold "E" at the top. They do come up once in a while but rarely in this kind of condition.
Gatefold Jacket: Near Mint.....in beautiful condition with only minor wear to a couple of the corners.
Record: Near Mint.....the heavyweight vinyl shines like new with hardly a blemish to be seen. The audio is clear, balanced, and distortion-free.....a truly superb "audiophile" pressing and a wonderful example of this great album.
