Description

An extremely rare and almost impossible to find concert poster/program used to advertise the July 8, 1972 Friends of the Earth/Save the Whale Benefit Concert, at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and headlined by David Bowie & The Spiders from Mars.... A venue with capacity of barely two and a half thousand, this programme now 44 years old has only very rarely found its way to market.

A museum quality piece of Bowie Memorabilia.

This double sided beauty opens to 20? x 30?; one side is the poster used to promote the show showing Bowie on top of a whaling harpoon, with ticket prices from 50p !! On the other side, biographies on Bowie, other acts and information on Friends of the Earth and Saving the Whales, and other ads including one for Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust album....and Mary Quant.

This extremely important concert took place just two days after Bowie’s first appearance on Top of the Pops, where he performed his single “Starman”–His breakthrough album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, had been released a month earlier.  And this was the concert that introduced Britain to Lou Reed, who joined Bowie on-stage for ‘White Light/White Heat’, ‘Sweet Jane’ and ‘Waiting For the Man'

Reviews for Bowie’s performance that night had the  Melody Maker proclaiming “A Star is Born!  When a shooting star is heading for the peak, there is usually one concert at which its possible to declare – That’s it – he’s made it” and Music Week raving “David Bowie will soon become the greatest entertainer Britain has ever known.”

How true!!

This is not a tour programme that was available to many in venues country or worldwide but a one off concert event of which so few must have survived.... A very historic and important event at that.

This programme has so very rarely come up for sale it's valuation is difficult, so please feel free to make an offer or message me with any info you may have.

The condition is superb as can be seen in the photos.

Please feel free to contact me for any other information or photos if needed.

Thanks for looking.
