Apart from what you hear, of course! The Dramatics' 1972 Stax/Volt breakthrough rounded a hard historic corner, where Memphis soul producers had been reengineering the style to sound as cinematic as West Coast Philly soul - except without sacrificing the genre's classic gritty undertow. Detroit ensemble The Dramatics were ripe for this sort of experiment, as the theatrics they brought to their vocal performances were uniquely theirs. 'Hot Pants In The Summertime' and 'Get Up And Get Down' are the best demonstrations, revealing an albatross' range through elaborate five-part harmony arrangements in soul.
