Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Not dead flat seen on rotation, but absolutely no issues with tracking with no noises. Even the most basic budget deck will have no issues with this.

Weight of this Record: 113 grams. Quite typical for the era.

Rarity: The album itself – moderate. But this copy is a little different. All four of the band members signed the front cover – these seen in close up. These at the time were: David Gahan, Martin Gore, Alan Wilder and Andy Fletcher. This is not dedicated and all the signatures, in pen, are very neat, unsmudged, clear and precise, one Depeche Mode fans will treasure.

Brief Info: Album number four by these quite popular electro-band. It peaked at 5 in the UK album charts and includes three singles. A copy in very fine condition and offering superb sound. What makes this particular example stand out from the rest is, all the band members signed the front cover, and very neatly so too. Without knowledge of the band members, it would not be too easy to read them, but they can easily be cross-checked from the band personel when this album was made.

Top left is David Gahan. To it’s right is Andy Fletcher. Then below left is Martin Gore and finally to it’s right is Alan Wilder. All are crisp, very neat and with NO smudging. A superb item for framing and the record plays nigh-on perfectly. A very rare opportunity indeed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with a semi-shiny finish and NO bar-codes. Assume printed and made in England as the lyric inner sleeve has UK credits.

Cover Front: The front has little wear and the aforementioned signatures are in superb condition – I hope my close-up pictures do these justice. Any creasing or rubbing very little and light, a trace of rim impression near the top edge.

Cover Back: All very similar again.

Top Edge: Very clean, straight with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: A couple of gentle rub traces, again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal traces of wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is nigh-on perfect and quite well centred on a fairly narrow depth.

Corners: Any tip rubbing very small and light, most on the bottom right, but still only quite small. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A superb item for signature and fans of this evergreen band. A very strong all-round example and finding any one with the band member’s signatures better will prove close to impossible. Such items do not come along often, and those that exist, usually remain in fan’s collections or are framed. This possibly unique, available item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): with little to fault. A little gentle rim impression is near impossible to avoid and one small edge split I have neatly repaired to stop the possibility of it widening – you would hardly even know it had been there. Barely any creasing and clean, an unlined lyric inner printed both sides.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this hardly does this little-played record justice. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with decent shine, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Any surface marks are very few and faint, minor inner friction traces only that have no effect on sound at all. Visually a fine record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very little-played record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. The cover signatures speak for themselves and clearly a very rare opportunity.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
