Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate with modest visibility. Another gem from the ‘Hendrix’ collection I am currently offering. This record is very clean indeed and plays with SUPERB sound.

Rarity: Moderate: this was a popular rock classic, very clean originals with audiophile standard sound are a different matter. Those who bought this from 1972 usually played it into submission. This record offers supreme sound, there lies the difference.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Hardly an album that needs much introduction, it’s simply one of the most famous and best of the ‘popular’ heavy rock albums of the early 70s. All seven tracks included will be known to most collectors and of course includes the classic ‘Smoke on the Water’ with possibly the most famous rock guitar riff ever recorded. This evergreen track is based on the infamous burning down of a Swiss venue where Frank Zappa and the Mothers were playing at the time [this famous gig can be heard on the officially issued bootleg Swiss Cheese Fire. Also featuring the most famous and best ever Deep Purple line-up of Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord and Blackmore, this too is arguably their best ever studio album – Machine Head is a true classic in the true sense of the word. This is a lovely early-pressed copy and it plays nigh-on perfectly. A lovely laminated cover and lyric insert sheet. This has the first matrixes and very wide grooves that end almost into the label rim itself – the wider the bandwidth, the better the range and sound and barely a millimetre of space wasted on this copy. Heavy rock albums via vinyl are unbeatable and this more than proves the point. Get this on to your deck and rock the night away – dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh - dah dah dah-dah-dahhh.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format, laminated both sides, all closed edges are covered and it ends inside on the bottom pair. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in Great Britain by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. The front picture may appear to have marks, but let me assure quickly, this is the cover’s artwork design and nothing to do with wear or blemishes, in fact this front looks terrific, as does it all. This includes it’s polylined inner sleeve and the large multi-fold lyric insert sheet.

Lamination – Front and Back: Both sides retain a rich shine, freshness and clarity with hardly any traces of dulling or marks. No laminate lifting or blistering and any creases only very fine edge types. Even viewed critically under angled light, no impressions or friction rubs, the surface almost looks ‘ice-like’ with super-smoothness and ultimate sheen. The back has barely any trace of record rim impression or rim dulling either, that highly unusual for a cover over 40-years-old with a 150 gram record inside all that time. This up there with the best I have seen with the laminate superbly and neatly adhered with no mottling or bubble spots. They seldom get much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is near perfect and even the laminate ends are clean and unpulled. So often the laminate contracts and leaves a sticky line and sticks together when closed – this has barely any traces of this.

Top & Bottom Edges: Barely any trace of wear to any, all very smooth and straight with no scuffs to the fingertip at all, all retain full laminate cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and fairly sharp, a little thickening seen mainly on the front end inside panel when viewed end-on. The record enters on the back and both are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Very solid, straight with any compression gentle, this mainly from natural opening where a light central recesss has just started to form. All the text is perfect and unworn with minimal traces of sinking and the laminate fully adhered with no flaking or peeling. This early copy has the much thicker spine which looks fantastic, but are more vulnerable to all forms of wear and damage. So often seen peeled or broken, this laminate again remains absolutely smooth and unscuffed. Lastly, this is folded squarely, so the edges meet up near flush and parallel – these small details make all the difference for the more discerning collector.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint – the spine pair especially are practically unworn at all. Very fine to excellent shape (or better) is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this famous 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This very attractive and fresh item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Lyric Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: a large double-fold lyric sheet printed on one side only. This looks as clean and fresh as when first made and has never been mounted. Folded perfectly with no creasing, grubbiness, handling marks or splits. All edges and corners crisp and precise, this is fantastic.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white heavy-duty inner that is polylined. It shows hardly any real wear and has only lightly aged with the usual darkening of the seam adhesive. Minimal traces of any creasing and the lining very clear as seen through two immaculate window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): and a very impressive early heavy pressed copy with just a fairly light surface mark on the first song that has NO SOUND whatsoever – in fact the whole album plays beautifully with practically nothing unwanted at all. Very clean with lovely shine and rich black finish. Heavy pressed with very wide grooves for ultimate sound quality, this takes the stylus almost on to the label before the music areas end. This is not an exceptionally long album which means the grooves are far wider than most and the entire diameter of the record is fully utilised for maximum hi-fi sound. Any other surface blemishes are few, faint and light, even when scrutinised under bright angled light – the one superficial surface mark apart, this is a really lovely looking record. And popular titles like this are so often played into submission – not this one for sure.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is highly impressive with a wide dynamic range and very rich sound with amazing dynamics and detail. Barely any surface sounds at all and no pops or clicks were noted and this early pressed copy sets a very high standard. Real power, richness and depth and most importantly, that classic heavy vinyl sound that classic rock music demands. Genuine punch and slam – one to really get the speaker cones and air moving, this is master-level heavy rock and this line-up gelled to perfection. The really early cuts offer that little bit extra in super detailing, real clout, pace and rhythm and no other format really compares to the original vinyl when found at it’s best. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very modestly, and without doubt, on a quality system. The cover was protected and owned by one person from new. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this genuine rock classic. This record will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

End Piece: Even though I know every track like the back of my hand, I can always enjoy hearing a great vinyl copy of this one. This was Deep Purple at their very best, a band at their creative peak following the great Fireball, In Rock and the brilliant double live set Made in Japan, recorded around this time. Can any rock collection be taken seriously without this one? This is a terrific record and copy and can be played at great volume with high confidence of clean sound. Dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh - dah dah dah-dah-dahhh, rarely sounded much better to these ears – I can sense another play coming on!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
